等级场景中的进言包装 / Hierarchy-Aware Advice Framing

Definition

等级场景中的进言包装 / Hierarchy-Aware Advice Framing is the pattern where accurate counsel needs a form the superior can accept without feeling publicly diminished. It does not mean diluting substance into flattery; it means preserving the decision value of advice by fitting wording, timing, and face-saving structure to the hierarchy.

Current Synthesis

The 129 CE Hanji 809 layer adds a negative signal case before the later remonstrance examples. 汉顺帝 publicly responds to disasters by lowering imperial food and banning precious-object tribute, but 文龙 presents a large pearl from 桂阳郡. Shun returns it as flattery. The lesson is not that subordinates should avoid all deference; it is that status-directed signals fail when they ignore the superior’s declared political frame.

An earlier Western Han case in Hanji 272 part 2 makes decision ownership explicit. 公孙弘 reportedly lays out facts, reasons, and options without confronting 汉武帝 publicly, allowing correction to enter the decision while the ruler still visibly chooses. 袁固生 supplies the boundary condition: preserving face and choice is advice design; bending learning or professed conviction to obtain favor is a different practice.

A late Western Han ruler-facing version appears through 王嘉 in Hanji 593. Wang Jia needs to tell 汉哀帝 that 董贤’s favor has become a public burden, but he does not begin with accusation. He praises Aidi, invokes chancellor duty, lists concrete public-resource abuses, uses disaster and rumor pressure, and then reframes the remedy as protecting Dong Xian because wrong love will harm him. The advice remains hard, but its form gives the ruler a face-saving route to accept it.

Hanji 596 supplies a parallel 鲍宣 case with more visible reception. Bao Xuan first recognizes Aidi’s initial correction, then uses continuing disasters and public unease to argue that the center of the problem remains Dong Xian’s public-resource privilege. He finally recodes dismissal and return to the fief as protection for the favorite. Aidi answers with recalls and Bao Xuan’s Sili appointment, though the proposed Dong Xian withdrawal does not become durable policy.

The 134 CE Hanji 816 layer adds a danger-management form. 周举 is direct when he diagnoses drought as a palace and policy problem, but when 汉顺帝 asks him to name corrupt and treacherous officials, he does not turn the interview into a risky list. He gives Shun an acceptance path and diagnostic rule: repeated frank correction signals loyalty, while flattery and echoing signal treachery.

The 163 CE court layer in Hanji 858 widens the concept from face management to executable implementation. 陈蕃’s warning against imperial hunting is substantively correct: he names barren fields, tight finance, empty stores, war, displacement, rain, wheat planting, forced labor, and road repair. But it directly opposes 汉桓帝’s pleasure and receives no reply. By contrast, 周景 and 杨秉 frame eunuch-linked officeholding as a rule and review problem, name affected offices, and provide a reporting path to the Three Excellencies; Huan accepts it.

Hanji 1033 supplies the underlying 袁绍 council scene: 沮授 gives a strong recovery-first plan after the 公孙瓒 war, but frames the campaign against 曹操 as a dangerous move against the court-backed side and distinguishes righteous troops from arrogant troops. 郭图 and 审配 answer with a more ego-compatible frame, stressing Yuan Shao’s large army, available grain, and the possibility of making the attack look righteous.

Hanji 1034 develops the communication lesson explicitly. Ju Shou’s strategic content remains strong, but his blunt legitimacy language gives Yuan Shao less room to accept without losing face. Flattering advisers can then win the meeting with weaker strategy because their wording better matches the leader’s desired self-image. The concept therefore sits between content and reception: in a hierarchy, the delivery channel is part of the advice’s operational design.

Hanji 1042 shows the harsher failure mode through 田丰. Tian Feng’s defensive, agricultural, and harassment plan is more concrete than a vague objection, but he presses it just when Yuan Shao wants to move against 曹操. Yuan Shao interprets the persistence as shaking military morale and imprisons him, so the case extends advice framing from “not accepted” to “treated as a threat.”

Key Claims

  • Advice quality includes strategic content, acknowledgment of prior effort, acceptance path, preserved decision ownership, danger management, audience motive, and a concrete next step the hierarchy can execute.
  • A public-minded warning can fail when it directly indicts the superior’s pleasure without giving a face-saving or operational route.
  • Institutional framing can outperform moral rebuke when it names rules, target classes, responsible offices, and review procedure.
  • Blunt correctness can fail in hierarchy when it publicly lowers the decision-maker’s legitimacy, competence, or immediate desire.
  • Flattery and status-directed signals can fail when they contradict the ruler’s publicly announced standard, even if they seem deferential.
  • The remedy is not dishonest praise but decision-oriented framing that gives the superior a face-saving route to accept correction.
  • Repeated blunt correction before mobilization can be criminalized as morale damage even when the proposal is strategically coherent.

Evidence

  • Praise-to-protection sequence: Hanji 593 says Wang Jia praises Aidi before criticizing Dong Xian’s privileges and finally argues that restraint protects Dong Xian from harm.
  • Facts, options, and decision ownership: Hanji 272 part 2 says Gongsun Hong avoids public confrontation, presents the considerations, and leaves Wudi to select the outcome.
  • Integrity boundary: Hanji 272 part 2 pairs that method with Yuan Gusheng’s warning against distorting learning for worldly approval.
  • Acknowledgment-to-protection sequence: Hanji 596 says Bao Xuan credits Aidi’s initial correction, diagnoses unresolved Dong Xian privilege, and frames withdrawal as protection.
  • Reception boundary: Hanji 596 records personnel changes after the memorial but not implementation of Dong Xian’s dismissal.
  • Misread tribute signal: Hanji 809 says Wen Long presents a large pearl after Shun has issued a frugality edict and banned precious-object offerings.
  • Public-frame enforcement: Hanji 809 says Shun returns the pearl sealed and treats it as flattery, showing a signal punished for violating the ruler’s stated frame.
  • Criterion instead of name-listing: Hanji 816 says Zhou Ju answers Shun’s request for corrupt and treacherous names by giving a criterion that separates frank correction from flattery.
  • Direct cause diagnosis with acceptance route: Hanji 816 shows Zhou Ju criticizing palace luxury and harem policy while still offering Shun a practical repair path.
  • Correct warning without conversion: Hanji 858 says Chen Fan’s hunting remonstrance identifies real public burden, but Huan gives no reply.
  • Executable institutional frame: Hanji 858 says Zhou Jing and Yang Bing turn eunuch-linked officeholding into a rule, office-review, and reporting-chain proposal that Huan accepts.
  • Correct content, painful frame: Hanji 1033 has Ju Shou recommend rest, agriculture, court-facing victory reporting, gradual positioning, and harassment while warning that attacking Cao Cao risks looking like opposition to the emperor.
  • Ego-compatible counterframe: Hanji 1033 shows Guo Tu and Shen Pei praising Yuan Shao’s strength and arguing that the campaign can be cast as righteous.
  • Communication diagnosis: Hanji 1034 treats Ju Shou’s proposal as strategically strong but poorly packaged for Yuan Shao’s status psychology.
  • Organizational consequence: Hanji 1033 says Yuan Shao weakens Ju Shou by dividing his forces among Ju Shou, Guo Tu, and 淳于琼.
  • Punitive recoding: Hanji 1042 says Tian Feng keeps pressing a hold-and-harass strategy before Yuan Shao’s campaign, after which Yuan Shao shackles and imprisons him as a danger to morale.

Counterevidence & Qualifications

The concept should not be used to blame advisers for every ignored warning. Hanji 593 itself shows the limit: Wang Jia’s careful sequencing still leaves Aidi displeased. Hanji 809 shows that a public frame can make flattery visible, but it does not prove Wen Long’s private motive or that Shun’s wider fiscal practice was consistently frugal. Hanji 816 shows a skillful answer to a dangerous naming request, but it does not prove that every omission of names is wise or that Shun implemented the full reform program. Hanji 858 also shows the ruler-side variable: Chen Fan’s warning can be accurate and publicly responsible while Huan simply refuses to engage. Hanji 1033, Hanji 1034, and Hanji 1042 also identify Yuan Shao’s preferences, visible force advantage, factional infighting, Cao-side organization, and pre-battle morale anxiety as causes. Hanji 272 part 2 does not prove that Gongsun Hong always preserved his true position, that this method caused promotion, or that avoiding public confrontation is always desirable. The concept does not recommend false praise; the useful boundary is preserving truth while designing a viable route for the truth to be heard and acted on.

Hanji 596 adds a useful boundary: better framing can improve reception without securing full implementation. The concrete follow-up does not establish that Dong Xian was dismissed.

What Changed

  • Added Gongsun Hong’s facts-and-options method as a case where preserving the ruler’s decision ownership becomes part of advice design.
  • Made Yuan Gusheng’s warning the explicit boundary between hierarchy-aware delivery and distortion for favor.
  • Hanji 809 remains a negative signal case where Wen Long’s pearl fails because it contradicts Shun’s public frugality frame.
  • Hanji 816 adds a danger-management case where Zhou Ju converts a request for names into a usable loyalty criterion.
  • Hanji 858 continues to broaden the concept from wording and face management to executable institutional procedure.
  • 文龙 - local-official case showing failed deference when the signal contradicts the ruler’s stated standard.
  • 士大夫公共责任 - adjacent duty concept because advice framing should preserve public service rather than slide into flattering compliance.
  • 三公监察内廷职权 - institutional oversight concept that supplies the execution path in Hanji 858.
  • 根源诊断式进谏 - Hanji 816 shows advice framing paired with causal diagnosis rather than softened substance.
  • 天象灾异包装式进谏 - adjacent strategy because disaster pressure can provide the opening for hierarchy-aware correction.
  • 君臣反馈失灵 - hierarchy-aware framing is one mechanism that can either worsen or partially repair feedback failure.
  • 建设性异议 - the concept narrows dissent from willingness to speak into the design of speech that can be acted on.
  • 沟通边界设定 - both concepts treat communication as disciplined form rather than uncontrolled expression.
  • 护身符式进言 - related remonstrance pattern where order, protection, and face management shape whether correction survives.
  • 王嘉 - late Western Han remonstrant who frames criticism of Dong Xian’s favor as protection for Dong Xian.
  • 鲍宣 - late Western Han remonstrant who adds acknowledgment of prior correction and wins a partial personnel response.
  • 田丰 - adviser case showing how direct persistence can make coherent strategy personally dangerous.
  • 谋士政权架构 - adviser-rich systems still need channels that convert advice into ruler decisions.
  • 行势情战略评估 - hierarchy-aware framing protects the transmission of situational analysis into action.
  • 公孙弘 - Western Han adviser whose facts-and-options method preserves imperial choice while raising an integrity question.
  • 权势导向的机会主义站队 - failure boundary where audience awareness changes professed conviction rather than improving truthful delivery.
