Tian Dan spreads rumors that Qi most fears nose-cut prisoners being displayed and ancestral graves being dug up; Qi Jie does both, believing the acts will frighten the defenders.
The result is the opposite. Mutilated prisoners make surrender look worse than continued resistance, while grave desecration turns the siege into a family and ancestral violation. The people inside 即墨 become angry enough to demand battle, and the already captured Qi cities become harder for 燕国 to hold.
The concept is the negative mirror of occupation pacification strategy. 乐毅 tries to make conquered Qi tolerable; Qi Jie gives Tian Dan visible proof that Yan rule is humiliating and unsafe.
