Baseball Strike-Zone Automation

Baseball strike-zone automation is the translation of a human-called, rulebook strike zone into a measured system using camera tracking, player-specific calibration, and review procedure. MLB brings automated ball-strike tech to the Big Leagues introduces the concept through Major League Baseball’s [[AutomatedBallStrikeChallengeSystem|ABS]] and Hawkeye tracking.

The key design problem is that the source’s rulebook strike zone is three-dimensional while ABS is described as two-dimensional. Nola Agha says MLB tested where to place that two-dimensional zone and found the middle of the plate most accurate; the episode also reports calibration at 53.5% and 27% of player height for the top and bottom of the zone.
