Definition

Blind hope under uncertainty is the action-enabling expectation that a future may improve even when evidence cannot guarantee the outcome and mortality or failure remains unavoidable.

Current Synthesis

In 《被缚的普罗米修斯》, Prometheus does not abolish death; he stops mortals from continuously foreseeing it and places blind hopes in them before giving fire and the arts. Hope is therefore not knowledge about a favorable result. It is a practical orientation that lets finite people work, learn, care, invent, and invest in futures they may never see.

Its blindness is double-sided. Uncertainty makes hope possible, but hope can also hide danger, inflate success probabilities, or convert desire into imagined certainty. Io / 伊娥 shows that truthful knowledge need not destroy hope: disclosure can reveal severe suffering while also identifying an endpoint.

A more ambiguous container image comes from 《工作与时日》. After other evils escape Pandora / 潘多拉’s jar, elpis remains inside, but the poem does not settle whether humanity retains a resource for endurance or loses access to an expectation that might itself be good or bad. Hope’s location therefore cannot resolve its value; judgment must still compare expectation with evidence and present danger.

Key Claims

  • Hope is most needed where outcomes cannot be guaranteed.
  • Mortality awareness can coexist with action because people do not live under continuous precise foreknowledge of death.
  • Hope can sustain experimentation and long-term effort without proving that an outcome is likely.
  • Blindness can enable endurance while also concealing risk and encouraging overconfidence.
  • Knowledge and hope can correct one another; neither is a complete substitute for the other.
  • The survival value of expectation does not settle whether a particular hope improves risk judgment.

Evidence

Counterevidence & Qualifications

Hope is not evidence, probability, a policy, or a defense for ignoring known risk. The episodes offer philosophical interpretations rather than an empirical psychology of when optimism helps or harms. Translation of elpis, the jar’s spatial logic, and the relationship between Hesiod and Prometheus Bound remain disputed; the sources do not settle the full textual debate.

What Changed

  • Added Pandora’s jar as an unresolved case in which hope’s retention can signify protection, restriction, or continuing cognitive risk.
