揣摩 / Chuaimo Technique
揣摩 / Chuaimo technique is the persuader method 《资治通鉴·周纪》30丨苏秦的“开挂”人生 says 苏秦 reaches after deep reading 《阴符》. The episode explains it as a double reading: one must understand the external political situation and also read the listener’s motives, fears, and likely response.
The concept belongs inside 纵横家外交 rather than ordinary book learning. Su Qin’s later itinerary shows why: even after gaining the method, he fails with 周显王, 秦惠文王, and 赵国 before finding the right match between argument, audience, and state interest in 燕国.
The episode also links chuaimo to 鬼谷子 because the received Guiguzi text contains chapters titled “揣” and “摩.” Here the point is not simply that Guiguzi taught Su Qin, but that effective persuasion requires calibration between a state’s objective position and a ruler’s subjective sense of danger.
《资治通鉴·周纪》31丨合纵连横 围殴秦 extends chuaimo from speechcraft into personnel manipulation. Su Qin reads 张仪’s pride and desire for revenge, then uses humiliation and hidden funding to push him toward 秦国, where Zhang Yi’s access to 秦惠文王 can indirectly protect Su Qin’s 合纵 timetable.
《资治通鉴·周纪》32丨“史上首位联合国秘书长”苏秦 extends the technique through repeated audience calibration. Su Qin uses the same anti-Qin coalition goal with different evidence: 韩宣惠王 hears about finite Han land and infinite Qin demands, Wei is addressed through army strength, 齐国 through 临淄 prosperity, and 楚威王 as the final state needed to complete the chain.
Key Claims
- Persuasion depends on reading the situation and the audience together.
- Technique does not erase access problems; Su Qin still fails when the listener, court mood, or local reputation blocks reception.
- The successful Yan case works because Su Qin frames 赵国 as 燕国’s shield against 秦国, matching Yan’s weakness and fear.
- Chuaimo is therefore a practical bridge from study to 合纵 rather than a generic claim that knowledge automatically creates success.
- In Zhouji 31, the same reading skill applies to another strategist’s emotions and career incentives, not only to a ruler’s fear.
- In Zhouji 32, chuaimo becomes dignity-based persuasion when threat analysis is tuned to what would make each ruler feel dishonored by submission.
