Compensating Differentials

Compensating differentials are the wage premiums that should compensate workers for undesirable job attributes. In The real horror of ‘Alien’ and how it explains why we’re not paid enough, [[ArinDube|Arin Dube]] uses [[AlienFilm|Alien]] to ask whether workers facing extreme Negative Job Amenities are actually being paid enough for the risk they carry.

The concept depends on labor-market competition. If workers have real alternatives and job risks are visible, employers must pay more for dangerous or unpleasant work. If Labor Monopsony, Shrouded Job Attributes, or Labor Search Frictions weaken outside options, the expected premium may not appear.
