Counterintelligence Rumor Wedge / 反间流言楔入

Counterintelligence rumor wedge / 反间流言楔入 is the tactic 《资治通鉴·周纪》78丨齐国命运竟被城管给救了? gives to 田单 after 燕惠王 succeeds 燕昭王. Tian Dan sends agents to spread the idea that 乐毅 is delaying the fall of 即墨 because he wants to rule Qi for himself.

The mechanism is narrower than generic rumor erosion of trust. A rumor wedge works by finding an existing crack, here the crown-prince-era tension between Yan Huiwang and Le Yi, then inserting a story that makes a useful commander look more dangerous than useful.

Its success depends on timing. The same slander fails under Yan Zhaowang because the old ruler chooses public trust and punishes the slanderer. It works under Yan Huiwang because the successor inherits the army’s gains but not the old ruler-commander bond.

《资治通鉴·周纪》79丨史上用耕牛 打胜仗第一人 extends Tian Dan’s use of rumor after the commander replacement. He plants fears about mutilated prisoners and grave desecration so 骑劫 will act on them. This turns rumor from a ruler-commander wedge into a battlefield bait that creates atrocity backfire mobilization.

《资治通鉴·周纪》94丨杀神白起,长平之战中的“草包”名将?(1) adds a Qin version before 长平之战. 范雎 sends agents with heavy money into 赵国 to spread the claim that 秦国 does not fear 廉颇, that Lian Po may surrender, and that Qin truly fears 赵括. The wedge works because 赵丹 / 赵孝成王 is already dissatisfied with Lian Po’s defensive posture.

《资治通鉴·秦纪》103-2|司马迁的“idol” 为何死于酒色 adds another Qin version after battlefield failure against 信陵君. Qin uses money, spies, 晋鄙’s former retainers, and staged congratulatory messages to make 魏安釐王 believe that Xinlingjun’s coalition prestige is turning into royal ambition. The wedge succeeds when Wei removes Xinlingjun from command, letting Qin damage the enemy’s strongest military-political asset without winning a direct battle.

《资治通鉴·秦纪》104|阴谋失算让秦国版图又又又膨胀了 is not a clean enemy-run counterintelligence case, but it adds an adjacent court-bribery echo. 郭开 does not need to persuade Qin or plant an enemy-wide rumor; he corrupts the envoy who reports on 廉颇 to 赵道襄王. The pattern is narrower, so it is tracked primarily under 谣言侵蚀信任, but it still shows how information intermediaries can make a state discard its own commander.

《资治通鉴·秦纪》112-1|姚贾是如何凭一张嘴破四国合纵? adds a diplomatic-agent version through 李斯 and 姚贾. When Zhao sends Yao Jia to organize Han, Wei, and Chu against Qin, Li Si spreads claims about Yao Jia’s theft record and self-enrichment. Zhao’s resulting expulsion removes a useful envoy and sends him toward Qin. This is not battlefield commander replacement, but the mechanism is the same: the target state is induced to distrust and discard a useful actor.

《资治通鉴·秦纪》113|李牧如何用一己之力阻秦国统一 adds the final Zhao-front version. Qin first exploits Zhao’s disaster conditions through 顿弱’s rumor and panic work, then bribes 郭开 to tell 赵迁 / 赵幽缪王 that 李牧 and 司马尚 are plotting rebellion. The wedge succeeds because it makes Zhao remove the command pair Qin most wants off the field.

Hanji 160 part 1 adds the Chu-Han version through 陈平. Instead of trying to remove one battlefield commander by court order, Chen Ping uses 刘邦’s forty thousand gold to make 项羽 distrust the small core of reliable Chu figures: 范增, 钟离眜, 龙且, and 周殷. The first named rumor claims Zhongli Mo is under-rewarded and ready to join Han, showing that the wedge can be built from reward grievance rather than only treason accusation.

Hanji 160 part 2 gives the Fan Zeng version. Chen Ping does not merely circulate a statement; he stages a social scene for Xiang Yu’s envoy, treating him as if he came from Fan Zeng and then withdrawing the honor. The returning envoy becomes the carrier of the rumor, while 项羽阵营派系裂缝 supplies the background that makes a false separate-Fan-Zeng channel believable to Xiang Yu.

Key Claims

  • Rumor is strongest when it amplifies a suspicion the target already finds emotionally or politically plausible.
  • A succession transition can make old military success look like new political threat.
  • Counterintelligence can be operational without immediately winning a battle if it causes the enemy to damage its own command structure.
  • The tactic links information war to battlefield commander replacement risk: the rumor matters because it changes who commands the army.
  • The same operator can use rumor at multiple levels: first to change enemy command, then to provoke visible enemy acts that damage occupation legitimacy.
  • Qin’s Changping use shows the tactic can praise an untested enemy candidate rather than only accuse the incumbent; the goal is still to make the target ruler damage his own command structure.
  • Qinji 103-2 shows the tactic after an enemy victory: the rumor reframes coalition prestige as usurpation risk so the target state destroys its own successful commander.
  • Qinji 104 is adjacent rather than central: the corrupt report about Lian Po is internal court sabotage, but it shares the same command-damaging information pathway.
  • Qinji 112-1 widens the pattern from commanders to envoys: rumor can make a state export diplomatic talent to the enemy.
  • Qinji 113 returns the pattern to battlefield command under disaster conditions: rumor, omen-like panic, bribery, and treason accusation combine to remove Li Mu and Sima Shang.
  • Hanji 160 part 1 adds that a rumor wedge can target a whole trusted core by connecting under-rewarded merit to imagined defection and kingship ambition.
  • Hanji 160 part 2 adds that a rumor wedge can be theatrical and indirect: the operator creates an experience the enemy’s own messenger will report as suspicious.
