Curiosity Over Reactivity

Definition

Curiosity over reactivity is the conflict stance of loosening attachment to one’s first story long enough to investigate another person’s experience without surrendering judgment, boundaries, or responsibility.

Current Synthesis

Reactivity narrows conflict into defense, attack, blame, and certainty that one’s subjective account is simply the fact of what happened. Curiosity creates a pause in that loop. It asks what the other person perceived, what earlier experience may be shaping the present meaning, and what each participant is doing that intensifies or softens the exchange.

The source treats curiosity as both cognitive and embodied. A person in hyperarousal or self-protection may not be able to receive explanation, so a useful intervention may change posture, gaze, pacing, music, physical distance, or whether the conversation continues at that moment. Curiosity is therefore not endless discussion; it depends on enough regulation and reciprocity for discovery to be possible.

Key Claims

  • Subjective narratives can feel factual while omitting the other person’s experience.
  • Curiosity interrupts escalation by reducing attachment to an immediate defensive outcome.
  • Perspective-taking can begin with shared humanity before the most polarizing issue.
  • Implicit memory can shape present interpretation without becoming a complete explanation of it.
  • Bodily state and interaction setup affect whether curiosity is available.
  • Curiosity remains compatible with accountability, limits, and ending an unsafe exchange.

Evidence

Counterevidence & Qualifications

Curiosity does not establish that competing accounts are equally accurate or ethically equivalent. It should not become pressure to debate coercion, stalking, violence, or chronic intimidation with the person causing harm. The source offers psychotherapy-informed practice rather than evidence that one intervention fits every nervous system, culture, disability, or conflict.

What Changed

  • Created the concept from Perel’s contrast between exploratory curiosity and defensive reactivity.
