边疆征发反噬 / Frontier Conscription Backfire
Hanji 939 introduces frontier conscription backfire through the 南匈奴 crisis. The Han court orders Southern Xiongnu forces to support 刘虞 against 张纯, and 羌渠 sends cavalry, but the requisition makes his own people fear that Han demands will not stop.
The backfire is immediate and political. 醯落 and the 屠各胡 rebel, kill Qiangqu, and install 于扶罗. The court’s attempt to solve one frontier-civil crisis by drawing on an allied frontier group therefore destabilizes that group’s internal order and produces a new armed actor for later late-Han conflicts.
Hanji 938 supplies an adjacent but distinct Wuhuan case through 边兵粮饷供应失灵. There the failure is not a partner succession revolt caused by requisition pressure; it is the collapse of food, pay, and command credibility after Wuhuan cavalry have already been recruited.
This concept differs from ordinary military mobilization failure. It names the case where a center’s extraction of frontier auxiliary forces weakens the partner’s internal legitimacy and turns the partner into another crisis source.
Key Claims
- Frontier auxiliaries are not frictionless resources; requisition can shift internal legitimacy inside the allied group.
- A campaign demand against one rebel can generate a second rebellion if the recruited group expects repeated extraction without sufficient protection or payoff.
- The killing of 羌渠 and elevation of 于扶罗 make conscription backlash a succession event, not only a refusal to serve.
- Hanji 939 makes this an early pre-Dong-Zhuo warning: the late-Han center is still issuing orders, but its orders can multiply rather than contain disorder.
Connections
- 南匈奴, 羌渠, 醯落, 屠各胡, and 于扶罗 - source case’s internal-revolt chain.
- 刘虞, 幽州, and 张纯 - campaign target and frontier province that trigger the requisition.
- 利益结构式联盟脆弱性 - adjacent frame for why cooperation can fail when participant incentives diverge.
- 边兵粮饷供应失灵 - adjacent Hanji 938 case where an auxiliary force fails through logistics and resentment rather than through allied-group succession backlash.
- 州牧集权与地方割据 - same episode’s institutional response to disorder that may shift power away from the center.
