Instrumental Belief Critique
Instrumental belief critique is the source’s nameable Lu Xun pattern: a doctrine becomes corrupt when it is adopted only because it is useful for eating, status, protection, or political convenience. 75.故事新编:骷髅被复活后会感激庄子吗? develops it through 《起死》, “吃教,” and the episode’s broader claim that religion, science, revolution, loyalty, filiality, and public reverence can all be used opportunistically.
The concept does not mean that 鲁迅 rejects all belief, science, myth, or revolution. The episode explicitly argues the opposite: Lu Xun knew science, valued myth and religious imagination as literary and cultural sources, and still attacked the “中学为体,西学为用” habit of treating knowledge systems as removable tools while leaving deeper motives intact.
Hanji 995 adds a late-Han political-religious case through 笮融. Ze Rong’s Buddhist temples, sutra recitation, exemptions, and public feasts are not treated as proof against Buddhism; they become dangerous because he uses religious display and grain control as a power shell while repeatedly killing hosts such as 赵昱, 薛礼, and 朱皓. This branch is captured more narrowly as 工具化宗教权力.
《起死》 gives the literary mechanism. 庄子 uses 《齐物论》 language until 杨大 demands concrete compensation; the police and “隐士局长” then show how philosophical prestige can become social shield. 郭沫若 is used as a literary-politics example of the same “whatever works now” reversal.
Key Claims
- Hanji 995 adds that a religiously compassionate surface can become instrumental when ritual, grain, and belonging produce access without moral constraint.
- A belief can become instrumental even when its original content is serious.
- Opportunism differs from pluralism: the problem is using doctrine to avoid responsibility, not learning from several traditions.
- Science can be instrumentalized when it is reduced to technical utility while inherited status values remain untouched.
- Religion can be instrumentalized when faith becomes a route to protection, respectability, or material gain.
- Political language can be instrumentalized when revolution, loyalty, or filiality are switched on and off according to advantage.

- Science-Religion Civilization Tension - adjacent concept separating criticism of knowledge systems from rejection of them.
- Tool Rationality Spillover - broader wiki pattern where useful instrumental logic crosses a human boundary.
- Classic Reading Complexity - reading discipline needed to keep Lu Xun from becoming either a monument or a slogan.
