Jiang-Xiang Harmony / 将相和式内部团结

Jiang-xiang harmony / 将相和式内部团结 is the state-security pattern 《资治通鉴·周纪》77丨廉颇与蔺相如 史上最著名的一对“好基友” draws from 廉颇 and 蔺相如. The episode does not treat “将相和” only as a private friendship story; it places the reconciliation after 秦国’s military pressure and the dangerous 渑池 meeting.

The pattern has two moves. Lin Xiangru first refuses to let rank resentment become open conflict, because he believes 秦昭襄王 is deterred by Zhao’s combined diplomatic and military capacity. Lian Po then recognizes that his anger over status could weaken 赵国, and he performs a public apology through “负荆请罪.”

The concept therefore links personal restraint to external deterrence. A state under pressure cannot afford to let two essential capabilities cancel each other out: Lian Po represents military force, Lin Xiangru represents diplomatic courage and crisis judgment, and 赵惠文王赵何 needs both after Mianchi.

Key Claims

  • Elite rank conflict can become a state-security risk when rival officials embody different indispensable capacities.
  • Avoidance can be strategic restraint rather than cowardice when confrontation would degrade deterrence.
  • Apology matters politically when it restores cooperation between actors whose rivalry a stronger enemy could exploit.
  • The “将相和” story works because private virtue is made legible through public consequences for Zhao’s survival.
