Liao City Commander Dilemma / 辽城守将进退困局

Liao City commander dilemma / 辽城守将进退困局 is the political-military trap 《资治通鉴·秦纪》101-1|这位倒霉君王登基三天即猝死 builds around the unnamed 燕国 commander holding 辽城. After capturing the city from 齐国, he is accused to 燕王喜 of rebellion, while 田单 besieges him from outside.

The dilemma is not simply lack of military strength. The commander cannot advance because the city is isolated, cannot return because his own ruler may kill him, and cannot surrender because he has killed Qi people and may not be trusted. This makes the city hard for Tian Dan to take even though the defender is strategically trapped.

鲁仲连 breaks the stalemate by writing a letter and shooting it into the city. The letter works by combining dignity pressure with interest reframing: remaining passive is not loyal, brave, or wise, and the commander must compare two active exits rather than continue a losing posture.

Key Claims

  • A commander can be trapped by home-court suspicion as much as by enemy force.
  • Siege pressure may fail when the defender fears every exit more than continued resistance.
  • Persuasion can change a military result by redefining the defender’s available choices.
  • Lu Zhonglian’s intervention is effective because it addresses loyalty, shame, survival, and future treatment at the same time.
