Longzhong Plan / 隆中对

Definition

The Longzhong Plan / 隆中对 is the strategic framework attributed to 诸葛亮 for turning 刘备’s mobile coalition into a territorial power while maintaining cooperation with 孙权.

Current Synthesis

Hanji 1098 presents the plan as the point where Liu Bei’s broad restoration ambition becomes operational. The episode compresses it into three components: build a territorial base around 荆州 and 益州, use restoration of the Han as the highest legitimating objective, and cooperate with 孙权 against 曹操 within an emerging tripartite field.

Hanji 1099 develops the alliance-sequencing component. It says cooperation with Sun Quan was already part of Zhuge Liang’s plan, but the post-Changban crisis changes the order: instead of first controlling Jingzhou and then forming the alliance, Liu Bei accepts alliance before securing the territory.

The episode treats the revision as beneficial because early possession of contested Jingzhou could expose a still-weak Liu Bei to pressure from both 曹操 and Sun Quan. In this reading, a strategy can preserve its directional goal while changing the operational sequence when the actor’s capacity collapses.

Key Claims

  • Cooperation with Sun Quan is presented as an existing component rather than an improvised abandonment of the plan.
  • Post-Changban weakness moves alliance formation ahead of territorial acquisition.
  • Sequence adaptation can preserve a strategy’s purpose when original prerequisites no longer hold.
  • Taking strategically valuable territory too early can create simultaneous pressure from stronger neighboring powers.
  • A strategic program adds value by translating aspiration into territorial, legitimacy, and alliance components.

Evidence

  • Alliance continuity: Hanji 1099 says alliance with Sun Quan was already one step in Zhuge Liang’s framework.
  • Sequence revision: Hanji 1099 contrasts an expected Jingzhou-first sequence with the alliance-first result after Changban.
  • Two-front exposure: Hanji 1099 argues that holding Jingzhou without prior alignment could leave Liu Bei between Cao Cao and Sun Quan.
  • Operational program: Hanji 1098 links the Jingzhou-Yizhou base, Han-restoration objective, and Sun-Cao alignment to the move from aspiration toward an actionable path.

Counterevidence & Qualifications

This page currently rests on two popular-history episodes and does not reconstruct the full Longzhong text, chronology, territorial program, later execution, or historiography. Hanji 1098’s three-line compression, the exact original ordering, and Hanji 1099’s claim that alliance-first was unequivocally better remain source-scoped interpretations.

What Changed

  • Expanded the plan from alliance sequencing to its source-presented territorial, legitimacy, and coalition components.
  • Connected the plan to Liu Bei’s shift from general ambition toward operational direction.
