Mentalizing Projection / 心智化投射

Definition

Mentalizing projection is E46’s social-cognition mechanism where the mind models another person’s knowledge, motives, and intentions using materials drawn from its own experience, fears, and desires. The capacity makes group life possible, but it can also turn another person into a self-confirming model.

Current Synthesis

The concept belongs to the fourth layer of Evolutionary Misrecognition / 进化式误认. Group-living primates need to infer what others see, know, and intend, but the machinery for understanding others grows out of machinery for understanding oneself. That means the model of the other person is never cleanly external. In 《好朋友们》, Hyun-tae’s image of In-chul as someone who abandons friends can be read as a projection of Hyun-tae’s own fear and conduct.

Key Claims

  • Social cognition requires building models of other minds rather than only observing behavior.
  • Those models borrow from self-experience, so projection is structurally likely.
  • Interpersonal models are harder to falsify than many physical models because relationships generate ambiguous evidence.
  • Once a person is modeled as a type, later actions can be filtered to confirm that type.
  • Mentalizing is therefore both a cooperative capacity and a source of misrecognition.

Evidence

  • Evolutionary layer: E46 我们从未看见彼此 places mentalizing in primate group life, where status, food, mates, alliances, and betrayal all require reading others.
  • Self-derived material: E46 我们从未看见彼此 says the machine for understanding others is built from the model for understanding oneself.
  • Film application: E46 我们从未看见彼此 treats Hyun-tae’s suspicion of In-chul as generated from Hyun-tae’s own hidden abandonment and fear.

Counterevidence & Qualifications

Mentalizing projection does not mean other people are unknowable or that every suspicion is self-projection. The source’s caution is narrower: models of others need humility because they can mix evidence with unrecognized self-material.

What Changed

  • Added E46’s social-cognition mechanism for how interpersonal models become projections.
