Nature-Writing Object Thickness / 自然写作的对象厚度

Definition

Nature-writing object thickness is a structural test of whether a represented bird, animal, landscape, person, or place gains specific history, pressures, interests, and dimensions not reducible to the writer, rather than functioning only as evidence for the writer’s sensitivity, purity, knowledge, or personal lesson.

Current Synthesis

Episode 229: 钓一条大鱼 replaces the misleading demand for “selfless” nature writing with a relational question. An author cannot disappear from selection, syntax, classification, metaphor, or structure. First-person presence therefore does not decide whether a work is anthropocentric.

The stronger test is what happens to other beings after entering the prose. A subject becomes thicker when migration routes, molt cycles, survival pressures, local histories, prior injuries, and resistant behavior exceed the writer’s prepared meaning. It becomes thinner when every detail, quotation, failure, or encounter is converted into the same proof about the author’s identity.

Key Claims

  • Authorial presence persists even when first-person pronouns are removed.
  • Frequent use of “I” does not by itself make a work anthropocentric.
  • Nonhuman subjects become thicker through specific histories, constraints, interests, and resistance to interpretation.
  • A subject is thin when it has only one function: validating the writer’s self-image or lesson.
  • Detail matters most when it can revise or defeat the writer’s initial story.
  • Citation and comparison add thickness only when they reveal a new dimension of the subject.

Evidence

Author presence without pronouns

  • Episode 229: 钓一条大鱼 notes that even an apparently objective bird record contains choices about place, time, sex, name, and category.

Independent nonhuman history

  • Episode 229: 钓一条大鱼 uses the prior hooks and lines carried by the fish in Elizabeth Bishop’s “The Fish” to show an animal history that precedes and changes the current encounter.

Resistance to the prepared story

  • Episode 229: 钓一条大鱼 argues that sufficiently concrete natural subjects can disrupt the explanation a writer wanted to impose on them.

Counterevidence & Qualifications

  • Thickness is not the same as length, technical vocabulary, or quantity of facts; a long work can remain instrumental and a short poem can grant an object independent history.
  • Human metaphor and interpretation do not automatically erase nonhuman agency.
  • No representation can deliver unmediated access to another life; accepting incomplete understanding is part of the concept.
  • The framework evaluates textual relations, not the real author’s measurable ratio of self-love to love of nature.

What Changed

  • Created the concept from Episode 229’s “written thick or thin” criterion.
