Definition

撤压诱发内斗 is a strategy of deliberately reducing external pressure on a rival bloc so that unresolved internal rivalries reappear and weaken the target from within.

Current Synthesis

Hanji 1056 supplies the precondition that later becomes strategy: after 袁绍 dies without a public succession settlement, 袁谭 and 袁尚 are already divided by adoption, provincial bases, factional backing, and the claimed final-order installation of Yuan Shang. Yuan Tan kills 逢纪 after a troop dispute, but when 曹操 crosses the Yellow River and attacks, Yuan Shang still rescues Yuan Tan at 黎阳. Direct pressure therefore suppresses the internal fracture without resolving it.

汉纪1058 names the pattern through 郭嘉’s advice to Cao Cao after the Liyang-Ye campaign sequence. Guo Jia argues that Yuan Tan and Yuan Shang will cooperate while Cao Cao keeps pressure on them, but will fight once that pressure relaxes because Yuan Shao left no clear succession settlement and both sons retain support.

Cao Cao’s withdrawal toward Xu and his movement against 刘表 are therefore framed as active strategy, not mere disengagement. The follow-on narrative confirms the diagnosis: Yuan Tan and Yuan Shang split over armor and suspicion, 郭图 and 辛评 deepen resentment by blaming 审配, and Yuan Tan eventually sends 辛毗 to request Cao Cao’s aid.

The timing qualification becomes explicit in 汉纪1059. Once Xin Pi reaches Cao Cao, some officials prefer letting the brothers keep exhausting each other while Cao attacks Liu Biao; 荀攸 instead argues that the Yuan family’s four-province depth makes delay dangerous because one claimant may absorb the other. Pressure-release therefore creates an opening, but the opening still needs timely intervention before reconsolidation.

Key Claims

  • Pressure-release works only when the rival bloc already contains a latent internal conflict.
  • External military pressure can temporarily force rivals to cooperate against a common enemy even after internal violence has begun.
  • Relaxing pressure can be more damaging than immediate assault if it allows succession rivalry, adviser factionalism, and mistrust to surface.
  • The strategy converts an opponent’s internal legitimacy problem into an exploitable military opportunity.
  • The release phase should be followed by active reassessment; unchecked internal fighting may end with one rival reunifying the bloc.
  • Its success depends on timing; releasing pressure too early or against a cohesive opponent may simply grant recovery time.

Evidence

  • Latent split and first violence: 汉纪1056 shows Yuan Shao’s unclear succession, Shen Pei and Feng Ji’s claimed final-order installation of Yuan Shang, Yuan Tan’s self-styled command, and Yuan Tan’s killing of Feng Ji after the troop dispute.
  • Cooperation under direct pressure: 汉纪1056 says Yuan Shang rescues Yuan Tan at Liyang once Cao Cao attacks, even though the succession grievance is already active.
  • Strategic abstraction: 汉纪1058 has Guo Jia point to Yuan Shao’s failure to name a clear successor and to the comparable support bases of Yuan Tan and Yuan Shang.
  • Conflict after pressure eases: 汉纪1058 narrates the armor dispute, Yuan Tan’s attack on Yuan Shang, and the later request for Cao Cao’s aid.
  • Adviser amplification: 汉纪1058 shows Guo Tu and Xin Ping translating Yuan Tan’s grievance into a direct accusation against Shen Pei and Yuan Shang’s camp.
  • Intervention window: 汉纪1059 has Xun You warn that waiting for the Yuan brothers to finish each other could let one side consolidate the northern bloc again.

Counterevidence & Qualifications

The sources give one successful case rather than a general rule. The strategy presumes real internal fracture; without that fracture, withdrawal could stabilize the opponent or let it regroup. Even with a real fracture, delay can become counterproductive if one rival absorbs the other before the outside actor intervenes. The episodes also present the result through Guo Jia’s and Xun You’s strategic readings, so later sources may qualify how much of the Yuan-family split was caused by Cao Cao’s withdrawal versus preexisting succession structure.

What Changed

  • Added Hanji 1056 as the pre-strategy evidence that Yuan Tan and Yuan Shang can still cooperate while Cao pressure is immediate.
  • Clarified that pressure-release exploits an unresolved conflict; it does not create the conflict from nothing.
  • Preserved Hanji 1059’s timing warning that release must become intervention before reconsolidation.
  • 未定继承人风险 - supplies the internal fracture that pressure-release can exploit.
  • 形势情战略判断 - broader category of reading force balance, timing, and incentives before acting.
  • 君臣反馈失灵 - explains why corrective counsel such as Wang Xiu’s can fail once leader judgment degrades.
  • 利益结构化联盟脆弱性 - adjacent pattern where shared interest holds an alliance only while pressure or payoff remains aligned.
  • 两败俱伤、旁人得利 - names the hoped-for payoff of letting rivals weaken each other, with the same reconsolidation risk.
  • 胜后威胁排序 - adjacent target-order frame for deciding when to stop waiting and strike the remaining main threat.
  • 坚城消耗耐心 - contrast pattern where direct pressure is maintained rather than relaxed.
