Prestige-Based Coalition Leadership / 名望型联盟领导
Prestige-based coalition leadership / 名望型联盟领导 is the pattern Hanji 950 draws from 袁绍’s selection as盟主 of the 反董卓联盟. Yuan Shao has family prestige, broad elite recognition, prior anti-eunuch and anti-董卓 reputation, and some military preparation, so he can become the visible center of the common-enemy front.
The concept is not a claim that prestige equals command capacity. Hanji 950 pairs Yuan Shao’s selection with 郑泰’s warning that the coalition lacks coherent hierarchy and shared interest, and with 鲍信’s separate judgment that 曹操 may be the stronger future executor. Prestige can convene a coalition, but it does not automatically make members accept risk, logistics burdens, or subordination.
Key Claims
- High-status lineage and public reputation can solve the initial “who leads” problem in a coalition.
- Convening authority differs from operational command authority.
- Prestige leadership is especially fragile when members are already pricing offices, grain, troop control, and future rivalry separately.
