Protector-Captor Ambiguity / 护驾与挟持模糊性

Hanji 946 adds a pre-Dong-Zhuo version before the armed-rescuer pattern in Hanji 947. 张让 and 段珪 take 刘辩 / 弘农王 and Liu Xie / 汉献帝 out of 洛阳 after 何进 is killed; the act can be narrated as flight with the ruler, but functionally it also moves the ruler’s body under the eunuch side’s control.

This source makes the ambiguity start before a strong outside army arrives. The imperial boys are vulnerable because the court’s ordinary guard and seal system has collapsed, so the next “protector” inherits a field already shaped by capture-like movement.

Hanji 947 adds an early Luoyang version before the later Li-Guo hostage and escort branches. 董卓 comes to meet the escaped 刘辩 / 弘农王 and Liu Xie / 汉献帝, but the visible soldiers frighten the emperor and Dong Zhuo ignores officials who ask him to pull troops back.

The episode therefore shows protector-captor ambiguity at the entry point, before formal captivity. The language of welcoming the emperor is still available, but armed proximity already lets the “protector” control the court’s physical field.

Hanji 984 adds the pre-dual-hostage seizure. 汉献帝 sends mediators between 李傕 and 郭汜, but once Guo Si’s plan to abduct him leaks, Li Jue uses 李暹 and palace troops to seize the emperor first. The move is framed as keeping the emperor from a rival, but its practical form is forced relocation to Li Jue’s camp, followed by palace plunder and burning.

Hanji 985 adds the dual-hostage version before formal mediation fails. 李傕 holds 汉献帝 while 郭汜 holds ministers including 杨彪 and 士孙瑞, so protection and capture are no longer separable categories. The emperor can still appoint 伏皇后, but his tent can be hit by arrows, his doors can be guarded, and his food can be controlled by the same armed “protector.”

Hanji 986 adds the remonstrance-before-flight version. 李傕 holds 汉献帝 while condemning 郭汜 for taking ministers hostage; 皇甫郦 makes the double standard explicit by saying Li Jue’s control of the emperor is the greater offense. The source shows the ambiguity before road movement begins: “protecting” the emperor already includes refusing mediation, threatening officials, and extracting higher office.

Hanji 988 adds the lodged-emperor version of the ambiguity before Hanji 989’s route and supply cases. 李傕’s camp can claim proximity to the emperor while its Qiang-Hu soldiers harass the lodging, and 郭汜’s soldiers can block the carriage during departure. Protection, hosting, and obstruction sit in the same armed field, so imperial safety depends on 贾诩’s bargain and 刘艾’s public identification rather than on ordinary court control.

Hanji 989 adds the route-and-supply version of the ambiguity. 郭汜 can describe route preference as protection while trying to keep 汉献帝 west, and 段煨’s real supplies at 华阴 can still be framed by rivals as a capture attempt. The episode shows that escort, obstruction, and assistance are judged inside a rumor-heavy armed field, not by stated intention alone.

Hanji 990 backfills the pre-pursuit version of the pattern. 杨定, 董承, and 杨奉 speak through the language of protecting 汉献帝 and attacking 段煨, while 李傕 and 郭汜 reunite under a rescue pretext; in each case, the protective vocabulary is inseparable from the desire to control the emperor’s route and body.

Protector-captor ambiguity / 护驾与挟持模糊性 is the late-Han pattern made explicit by Hanji 991. 汉献帝 is still valuable because his body and title can legitimate commands, appointments, and future strategic claims, but every armed group close enough to protect him is also close enough to control, redirect, threaten, or abandon him.

In Hanji 991, 李傕, 郭汜, and 张济 pursue the emperor as a prize, while 董承, 杨奉, 白波军 leaders, and 去卑 try to keep him moving. The category problem is that “escort” and “capture” are not clean opposites. The emperor’s survival requires soldiers, yet soldiers turn court ritual, road choice, ministerial safety, and river access into coercive facts.

Hanji 999 adds the downstream version. After the immediate Li Jue-Guo Si danger, the emperor falls among 董承, 杨奉, 韩暹, 张杨, and other actors whose protection remains interest-divided. This keeps the court alive but also makes it vulnerable to the next stronger platform, eventually 曹操.

The concept differs from 合法性窗口抢占. Legitimacy-window seizure names the strategic opportunity for an outside actor who can protect and operationalize the emperor. Protector-captor ambiguity names the prior danger: before the opportunity is captured, the emperor’s recognized status attracts coercive protection from actors who cannot or will not restore ordinary sovereignty.

Key Claims

  • Hanji 946 adds that protector-captor ambiguity can precede formal rescue: fleeing with the emperor can still mean controlling the ruler’s body after ordinary court security fails.
  • Hanji 947 adds that protector-captor ambiguity can begin at the first armed encounter: a powerholder may arrive as rescuer while already controlling distance, fear, and troop presence.
  • Hanji 984 adds that protector-captor ambiguity can begin as preemptive seizure: one warlord takes the emperor first because a rival also wants to abduct him.
  • Hanji 985 adds that protector-captor ambiguity can start as symmetric hostage control: one warlord holds the emperor while the other holds ministers.
  • Hanji 986 adds that the protector-captor contradiction is already visible in remonstrance: Li Jue denounces Guo Si’s hostage-taking while holding the emperor himself.
  • Hanji 988 adds that hosting the emperor can coexist with soldier harassment and route blockage before the more explicit flight crisis.
  • Hanji 989 adds that food supply and camp access can become protector-captor evidence when rivals control the rumor channel.
  • Hanji 990 adds that “protecting” the emperor can first appear as an argument over whether to attack a supposed threat, not only as direct pursuit.
  • A recognized ruler can be politically powerful and physically helpless at the same time.
  • Protection becomes ambiguous when the protector controls routes, food, armed access, and communication.
  • The same imperial body can attract rescue, pursuit, and coercive hosting.
  • Court symbols and offices keep value, but their practical use depends on the armed field around them.
  • This ambiguity creates the precondition for later legitimacy-window seizure by a more capable actor.
