Root-Base Priority / 根本根据地优先

Hanji 964 adds the origin point before Yanzhou becomes Cao Cao’s root base in later episodes. 刘岱 dies because the province cannot manage the 青州黄巾军 crisis, after which 鲍信, 万潜, and local officials invite 曹操 to take over. The base therefore begins as emergency succession and defense, not as a settled possession.

Hanji 973 adds the immediate negative case before the later adviser explanation. 曹操 can threaten 陶谦 and defeat 刘备 in 徐州, but when 张邈 and 陈宫 invite 吕布 into 兖州, the offensive must stop because the base itself is collapsing.

Hanji 974 adds the pre-military failure mode. A root base can begin to collapse before enemy movement becomes visible if the local elite coalition no longer believes it is safe under the ruler. In 曹操’s 兖州, 边让’s killing, 张邈’s fear, and 陈宫’s persuasion turn local security anxiety into the betrayal that later forces base-first recovery.

Hanji 975 adds the crisis-detection layer before the base-first principle is verbalized. 曹操 is away attacking 陶谦 in 徐州 when 张邈 and 陈宫 invite 吕布 into 兖州. 荀彧 reads the danger early and recalls 夏侯惇 to 鄄城, showing that preserving the base starts with detecting the rear’s political shift.

Hanji 978 adds the morale and alignment layer before the base-first principle is later verbalized. 曹操’s remaining base holds because 荀彧 keeps 鄄城 from panicking before 郭贡, and 程昱 helps 靳允 hold 范县 despite 吕布’s family-hostage leverage.

Hanji 979 adds the concrete preservation stage before 荀彧 later states the base-first principle. 程昱 blocks 陈宫 at 仓亭津, 枣祗 holds 东阿, and 曹操 still has a place to return to after much of 兖州 turns against him.

Hanji 986 supplies the trigger for the root-base question. After 曹操 defeats 吕布 in 兖州, 陶谦 dies and 刘备 takes 徐州, making an outward attack look timely. The episode stops at the moment a counselor is about to object, so it prepares rather than fully states the principle.

Root-base priority / 根本根据地优先 enters the wiki through Hanji 987 as 荀彧’s answer to 曹操’s temptation to take 徐州. The principle is not anti-expansion. It says expansion becomes dangerous when the actor’s own base is still exposed, under-harvested, or politically unsettled.

The source case is 兖州. Xun Yu argues that Cao Cao’s root base is the place where his people trust him, where grain can be gathered, and where later attack or retreat remains possible. 吕布 and 张邈 make that base unsafe, so chasing Xuzhou after 陶谦’s death would trade a real foundation for an attractive but uncertain gain.

The concept differs from 退让式根据地经营. Strategic retreat base-building concerns turning an imposed fallback position into future power. Root-base priority concerns refusing an optional outward move until the existing foundation is secure. It also extends 战争成本与速决纪律 upstream: the cost problem is decided before the campaign begins, through harvest, rear security, local acceptance, and whether the target can feed the army.
