Rumor Erosion of Trust /
Rumor erosion of trust / 谣言侵蚀信任 is the risk 甘茂 explains to 秦武王 before the 宜阳 campaign in 《资治通鉴·周纪》57丨古代发毒誓还有这作用?. Gan Mao argues that long campaigns create time for rivals to repeat suspicions until even prior confidence becomes unstable.
The episode gives two examples. In the 曾参 story, Zeng Shen’s mother first rejects the accusation that her son killed someone, but repeated reports eventually make her flee. In the 乐羊 story, the general succeeds at 中山国 only because 魏文侯 withstands a box of slanderous letters and continues backing him.
The concept matters because it treats trust as a political resource with a decay mechanism. A ruler may sincerely trust a minister at the start, but repetition, delay, factions, and battlefield uncertainty can turn confidence into recall orders unless the commitment is reinforced.
Slander against 乐毅 fails under 燕昭王 because the ruler publicly reinforces trust, but a similar accusation succeeds under 燕惠王 after succession changes the ruler-commander relationship. 田单’s counterintelligence rumor wedge therefore shows rumor erosion from the attacker’s side: the goal is to make the enemy abandon its own commander.
赵丹 / 赵孝成王 repeatedly hears of losses and sees 廉颇 refuse open battle, so 范雎’s planted rumor does not create distrust from nothing. It accelerates an existing impatience into replacement by 赵括.
魏安釐王 has already lived through the problem that 信陵君 can save Wei while also overshadowing royal authority. Qin’s repeated insinuations that “the lords know Xinlingjun, not the Wei king” work because they attach to that older insecurity, causing the king to replace the commander who had just checked Qin.
廉颇 tries to demonstrate that he can still command, but 郭开 bribes the envoy sent by 赵道襄王. The damaging report turns appetite and bodily detail into a trust-destroying signal, so Zhao loses the chance to recover a veteran general even after recognizing renewed Qin pressure.
This time the rumor is not about 廉颇’s age but about 李牧 and 司马尚 plotting rebellion during Qin’s 229 BCE invasion. Zhao’s damaged disaster environment and 赵迁 / 赵幽缪王’s weak judgment make the accusation actionable.
Hanji 154 adds a useful failed-rumor case inside 刘邦’s camp. 周勃, 灌婴, and other old generals accuse 陈平 of “盗嫂,” but 魏无知 and Chen Ping move Liu Bang back to evidence, usefulness, and role. The source therefore shows that rumor erosion is not automatic: a ruler can block it when accuser access is weak and the target’s value is concrete.
Hanji 160 part 1 immediately supplies the successful enemy-camp mirror. Chen Ping, whose same-camp smear failed under Liu Bang, now uses rumor against 项羽 by making 钟离眜’s unrewarded military merit look like a reason for defection and future kingship ambition. The contrast makes ruler response decisive: Liu Bang tests rumor and keeps Chen Ping; Xiang Yu begins withholding trust from a useful Chu general.
Hanji 160 part 2 shows trust erosion moving from commander reward rumors to adviser isolation. The alleged Fan Zeng channel is not rational on its face because Fan Zeng had long wanted Liu Bang killed, but Xiang Yu’s suspicion and 项羽阵营派系裂缝 let a weak factual claim become operationally effective.
Key Claims
- Repetition can make even implausible accusation politically effective.
- Campaign duration increases the time available for court factions to reframe a commander’s delay as betrayal or incompetence.
- Ruler trust is operational, not only emotional: if it fails mid-campaign, alliances, promises, and battlefield plans can collapse.
- The episode uses rumor risk to explain why oath-bound command trust has strategic value.
- Rumor can be an intentional counterintelligence tool when it is aimed at a preexisting ruler-commander crack.
- Succession makes rumor more dangerous when the new ruler inherits the army but not the old trust relationship.
- Succession is not required: battlefield frustration and a defensive strategy that looks passive to the court can also prepare the ruler to accept slander.
- Even battlefield success can erode trust when the success makes a subject look like an alternative center of authority.
- Court reporting can convert a commander’s physical display into damaging evidence when an intermediary is bribed.
- Disaster and famine can accelerate rumor erosion because public fear, low morale, and military stress make loyalty stories easier to operationalize.
- Rumor can fail when the ruler tests accuser credibility, separates concrete faults from ungrounded scandal, and still needs the target’s role-specific ability.
- The same operator can survive rumor in one camp and weaponize it in another when the target ruler has a stronger suspicion/reward crack.
- A rumor does not need to be factually strong if it aligns with the ruler’s preexisting factional anxiety and is delivered through a credible in-group messenger.
