Strange Tale Moral Pluralism

Strange tale moral pluralism is the way 《搜神记》, as read in 06.搜神记： 二十四孝这口锅，干宝不背, preserves incompatible or at least unreconciled values inside one collection. The episode finds filial wonders, disaster omens, divine punishment, and moral accounting, but also Li Ji’s resistance, revenge against wrongdoing, abused women leaving a household, sympathy for nonhuman beings, and satire of rulers who cannot tolerate charisma or knowledge.

The concept keeps the source from being reduced to one doctrine. A later reader can dislike Guo Ju burying his son or other filial extremity stories without making that strand stand for the whole book. Conversely, the presence of more humane or rebellious stories does not erase the text’s superstition, violence, or harsh moralism. The archive’s value is that it lets these voices remain visible together.

28.聊斋志异：不为君王唱赞歌，偏向苍生说鬼话 adds a 《聊斋志异》 version. The episode finds filial and moral instruction in 蒲松龄, but also highlights the absence of loyalist praise, the presence of war trauma, fox and ghost agency, folk performance, failed courts, and examination satire. The plurality therefore becomes more literary and social: moral lessons coexist with sympathy for nonhuman beings and anger at human institutions.
