The source explains the choice through use-value and recognition rather than immediate power. Zhang Liang repeatedly speaks about 《太公兵法》, and Liu Bang can understand the arguments and adopt them. Zhang Liang had tried to tell others the same things without being understood, so Liu Bang’s comprehension becomes a decisive form of recognition.
This concept is adjacent to 士为知己者死, but it is narrower and less death-centered. Its focus is the moment when a strategist selects a patron because the patron can process the advice, not only because the patron honors him, feeds him, or gives him rank.
