Telos Crisis / 目的危机

Telos crisis is the purpose-collapse state [[DavidWeng|大卫翁]] borrows from [[TheSecondMountain|《第二座山》]] in 154.四十岁感言:不做那只温水里的青蛙. It names a condition where a person keeps doing the same work, living the same script, and occupying a respectable role without being able to answer what the activity is for.

The source’s version is not simple burnout. During the 2022 Shanghai lockdown, the physical feeling of being trapped made an existing career trap visible: income and position were still good, but inner drive had gone. Telos crisis therefore links Career Exit Friction / 职业退出摩擦 to Midlife As Gift: the useful middle-age question is not only “can I keep winning?” but “what am I continuing for?”

Key Claims

  • A telos crisis can appear inside success, not only after failure.
  • Physical confinement can reveal a preexisting psychological or career confinement.
  • The crisis is deeper than KPI pressure because it concerns the point of continuing.
  • Exit becomes more plausible when the person has resources, relational support, and a next concrete desire rather than only abstract dissatisfaction.
  • The concept makes purpose practical: it tests whether a person is still choosing the life or merely being carried by the role.
