Vertical Media Distribution

Vertical media distribution is the strategy of controlling more of the routes through which media reaches audiences and earns money. In The Walt Disney Company: Walt’s Era, Disney moves from dependency on outside customers and distributors toward a system that includes owned IP, merchandising, television promotion, Disneyland, and Buena Vista Distribution.

The concept is the media version of Distribution Led Product Building. Disney’s distribution choices shaped what the company could build: synchronized-sound shorts needed theatrical access, Mickey needed clubs and comics, Snow White benefited from merchandising and rerelease, Disneyland needed ABC, and later film economics benefited from direct distribution.

Key Claims

  • Distribution control reduces dependence on any single customer, buyer, or gatekeeper.
  • Vertical distribution can finance product creation when one channel promotes or subsidizes another.
  • Media distribution is not only delivery; it can also build demand, trust, and repeat behavior.
  • Working capital determines how much distribution a company can internalize.
