行势情战略评估 / Xingshiqing Strategic Assessment
Hanji 909 adds an early late-Han frontier case through 蔡邕’s opposition to the 177 CE Xianbei expedition. Cai reads the “势” as a mismatch between Han capacity and 鲜卑 strength under 檀石槐, and the “情” as a court environment where 夏育’s confidence, 田晏’s desire for merit, and 王甫’s sponsorship can overpower a realistic risk assessment.
Hanji 945 adds the pre-palace timing problem before Hanji 946’s killing. 何进 has formal position and can receive advice from 郑泰, 卢植, 陈琳, and 曹操, but he treats the outside-troop summons as the route to control rather than reassessing it as conditions shift.
The source’s “势” is the moving force field: 董卓 has not yet entered 洛阳, 种劭 can still halt him temporarily, and 袁绍’s pressure can still be redirected. Its “情” is He Jin’s attachment to his chosen plan, Empress Dowager He’s palace-family softness, and Zhang Rang’s access to that channel. Hanji 945 therefore makes 外兵入京升级风险 a failure to read changing conditions before they become irreversible.
Hanji 946 then adds the timing-window payoff before Hanji 947’s Bao Xin warning. He Jin has formal position and outside military support, but the source frames him as acting after the palace conflict has already become lethal and still relying on a softened route through 何太后.
The source’s “势” is the fast-changing inner-court field: 张让 and 段珪 can hear, move, summon, and strike first through palace access. Its “情” is He Jin and 袁绍’s hesitation against opponents who do not share their procedural assumptions. The case therefore makes 死斗局优柔寡断风险 a specific failure of condition-sensitive assessment.
Hanji 947 adds a late-Han missed-window case before the existing Yuan Shao and Cao Cao branches. 鲍信 reads 董卓’s arrival as dangerous but not yet consolidated: the troops are strong, newly arrived, and tired, so immediate attack could still work.
袁绍 misreads or fails to act on that timing. Once Dong Zhuo stages 军力声势表演, absorbs He-family troops, and turns 吕布 against 丁原, the situation changes. The source therefore makes “势” dynamic: a correct assessment can expire within days if not converted into action.
Hanji 956 adds a negative late-Han case before Xun Yu’s later camp choice. 韩馥 has material “势” in 冀州 through troops, grain, and commanders who can still intimidate 袁绍, but misreads the pressure sequence as inevitable defeat. Yuan Shao’s side reads the same field better, using external threat, insider speech, and Han Fu’s self-comparison to turn a weak supply position into provincial control.
Hanji 960 adds an early late-Han camp-choice and migration case through 荀彧. Xun Yu reads 颍川 as unsafe before the danger is universally accepted, then reads 袁绍 and 曹操 by whether each can convert talent into action. The source therefore makes “势” include exposed geography and changing control of Jizhou through 韩馥, while “情” includes local attachment, family risk, and a ruler’s willingness to use advice.
The same source adds a tactical “势” branch at 界桥之战. 公孙瓒 has the visible mounted advantage, but 麹义 changes the actual conditions through shielded infantry, crossbow range, and timing. This keeps the concept from becoming only high politics: condition-sensitive assessment also applies to battlefield distance, formation discipline, and how an opponent interprets a small vanguard.
Hanji 965 adds the pre-crisis assessment failure behind Hanji 966. 王允 reads amnesty, face, and Guandong alliance trust as the main issues, but misses the remnant commanders’ fear, the safety value of 皇甫嵩’s proposed troop arrangement, and the instability shown by 牛辅’s camp panic. 贾诩 reads the same field from the exposed commanders’ side: dispersal means vulnerability, while armed unity creates leverage.
Hanji 966 adds a captured-court crisis case before the later Cao Cao and Li-Guo branches. 王允 misreads how to use Liangzhou intermediaries 胡文才 and 杨整修, while 宋翼 misreads an imperial summons under 李傕 and 郭汜 coercion as ordinary command. 王宏 supplies the positive contrast by reading remaining outside troops as leverage rather than treating entry into the captured court as unavoidable.
Hanji 969 adds a combined geography-and-opportunity case. 曹操 reads 袁绍 and 袁术 as two tigers whose conflict creates usable timing, while the episode’s comparison of 扬州, 荆州, and 益州 shows that strategic assessment also means judging base quality, routes, and river-corridor optionality through 长江走廊战略根据地.
Hanji 975 adds the earliest Yanzhou crisis-reading case before Hanji 978’s Guo Gong and Fan County branch. 荀彧 does not rely on one clue: he combines 张邈’s envoy avoiding the “兖州牧” title, 吕布’s route toward 兖州 rather than 徐州, and the fact that 曹操 has taken the main force away against 陶谦.
In this source, “势” is the exposed rear and movement direction, while “情” is the political intention signaled by title avoidance and local-official participation. Xun Yu’s assessment becomes strategy only because he quickly recalls 夏侯惇 to 鄄城.
Hanji 978 adds a pre-Cangting Yanzhou assessment case. 荀彧 reads 郭贡 as dangerous but not yet committed to 吕布, while 程昱 reads 靳允’s family-hostage crisis through the relative durability of Cao Cao, Lü Bu, and 陈宫. In this source, “势” includes timing, rumor, and the remaining cities; “情” includes fear, family leverage, local prestige, and whether an actor’s commitment is settled.
Hanji 979 adds a pre-Puyang late-Han assessment case. 程昱 reads 仓亭津 as the decisive crossing before 陈宫 can reach 东阿, while 曹操 later reads 吕布’s failure to take 鄄城 and cut the grain route as proof that Lü Bu missed the real terrain-and-supply opportunity.
Hanji 985 adds the pre-mediation Li-Guo assessment failure. 李傕 and 郭汜 treat the emperor and ministers as tactical leverage, but the field they create also weakens their own control: Li Jue must buy Qiang-Hu support through gifts and promises, 张苞 can defect from inside his camp, and 杨彪’s rebuke exposes the political cost of the double hostage structure. “势” is no longer court hierarchy; it is camp access, auxiliary incentives, and who can still move or feed the emperor.
Hanji 987 adds the base-before-expansion case that immediately precedes the Hanji 988 court-flight branch. 荀彧 reads 曹操’s 徐州 temptation by asking whether the apparent target, rear area, people-support, grain, and timing actually fit. His answer is no: 兖州 is Cao Cao’s root base, 吕布 and 张邈 still threaten it, Xuzhou’s people remember Cao Cao’s earlier violence, and the target’s wheat is already gone. In this source, “势” is the unstable rear and harvest window, while “情” includes both Xuzhou resentment and Cao Cao’s desire for an attractive eastern prize.
Hanji 988 adds the immediate Chang’an assessment case before Hanji 989. The source’s “势” changes when 杨奉 leaves 李傕 and 贾诩 removes Qiang-Hu support; its “情” includes Li Jue’s wife’s refusal to hand over a son as hostage, soldiers’ willingness to challenge the emperor’s carriage, and the remaining awe once the emperor is visible. The correct reading is therefore not abstract benevolence or feud, but leverage, fear, family attachment, and the thin residue of title authority.
Hanji 989 adds the immediate pre-Huayin assessment case. 郭汜 misreads route coercion as controllable after the court grants him status, while 段煨’s supply effort at 华阴 becomes dangerous because his old conflict with 杨定 changes how actors interpret food, vehicles, and camp access. The episode’s “势” is route, grain, fire, and military escort; its “情” is suspicion, old enmity, and whether officials such as 杨彪 can make a defense credible.
Hanji 990 adds a late-Han survival-and-alliance case before the Hanji 991 pursuit. 段煨 is read as seeing the harm in overreaching while keeping grain and court supply useful, whereas 杨定 misreads the field by treating Duan Wei’s position as a quick prize and missing how 李傕, 郭汜, and 张济 can re-sort around 汉献帝. The host’s formula “见利而进,见害而止” is therefore treated as a source-scoped Legalist shorthand for condition-sensitive judgment.
行势情战略评估 / Xingshiqing strategic assessment enters the wiki through Hanji 159-2 as the episode’s reading of 荀悦’s comment on why similar strategies produce different outcomes. The three terms are used as a practical test before copying precedent: “行” asks about broad gains and losses, “势” asks about timing and situational movement, and “情” asks whether people’s will, incentives, and commitments are reliable.
The source case is 张良’s rejection of 郦食其’s revived 六国复国式反秦策略. The same restoration idea could help 陈胜 multiply enemies against 秦国, because he would be giving away territory he did not yet control. In 刘邦’s 荥阳相持 crisis, it would split his own reward pool, pull followers back toward local kings, and create rulers who might align with 项羽.
The concept also covers the episode’s military analogies. 宋义’s wait-for-exhaustion logic resembles a usable third-party tactic in lower-urgency interstate warfare, but the Qin-Zhao-Chu crisis before 巨鹿之战 makes delay dangerous. 韩信’s 背水一战 works because morale, enemy misjudgment, and hidden cavalry are aligned, while Liu Bang’s river-backed disaster at 彭城之战 shows that similar terrain can become rout when troops are complacent and the enemy is shocked into desperate counterattack.
Hanji 995 adds a late-Han route-and-person case. 许劭 reads 刘繇’s options by geography, fallback route, rival desire, and official legitimacy: 会稽郡 is rich but exposed and wanted by 孙策, while 豫章郡 better preserves future room. His warning about 笮融 and 朱皓 then makes “情” concrete as character and trustworthiness, not just sentiment.
Hanji 1029 adds a Yuzhang intelligence version. 太史慈’s return report does not only judge 华歆’s personality; it maps which local actors can be controlled, which cannot, and where separate offices have formed. The assessment lets 孙策 treat 豫章郡 as an opportunity shaped by local fragmentation rather than as a single administrator’s domain.
Hanji 187 adds Xue Gong’s three-strategy assessment of 英布 / 黥布’s rebellion as another concrete use of condition-sensitive strategy. The upper, middle, and lower plans differ less by slogan than by geography, supply, and coalition reach: controlling Qi/Lu, Yan/Zhao, 敖仓, and 成皋 would expand the rebellion’s conditions, while the lower strategy narrows the move toward self-preserving logistics and 长沙国 support. Xue Gong’s forecast then turns “情” toward actor psychology: Ying Bu’s fear and short horizon make the lower strategy more likely even though broader options exist.
Hanji 1002 adds a late-Han legitimacy-window version. 袁术 misreads the imperial title as a force multiplier, while 孙策 reads the same move as a public pretext that will make separation necessary. 荀彧 reads 汉献帝 from the opposite side: the emperor’s weakness and continued recognition create a short 合法性窗口抢占 opportunity for 曹操 before another actor can capture it.
Hanji 1004 adds two late-Han condition-reading cases. 董昭 reads 洛阳 as a bad control environment because food, housing, and armed loyalties do not support 曹操’s court ambitions, while 孙静 reads 王朗’s fixed defense at Guling as a reason to detour and strike the rear. Both cases make “势” practical: conditions decide whether the correct move is relocation or maneuver.
Hanji 1003 supplies the prior route-access version. Dong Zhao reads 杨奉’s position at Liang, his need for grain, his escort merit, and 曹操’s need to reach 洛阳 as one problem. The resulting letter turns “情” toward Yang Feng’s face and material anxiety, while “势” turns on whether the route to 汉献帝 can be opened before 韩暹 and the court actors block Cao Cao.
Hanji 1007 adds a late-Han local-governor failure through 孔融 in 北海郡. 左承祖 reads the situation in “势” terms: Kong Rong has too few troops and too little grain while stronger powers such as 袁绍, 曹操, and 公孙瓒 shape the field. Kong Rong’s refusal to attach to a stronger force makes reputation and ambition override survival conditions, and 袁谭’s later capture of Beihai shows the cost of that misread.
Hanji 998 adds Gongsun Zan’s own negative “势” case before he becomes a structural distraction in later Cao Cao planning. After losing people-support and facing a coalition around 刘虞’s old network, 乌桓, 鲜卑, and 袁绍, Gongsun Zan reads a children’s song and 易县 geography as safety. The episode argues that this misreads the situation: 易京 can store grain and block attack, but it cannot restore initiative, talent access, or the regional conditions he has lost.
Hanji 1030 adds the later misread. Gongsun Zan still assesses the siege through walls, grain, and Yuan Shao’s presumed inability to remain for years, but the operative “情” has shifted to subordinate confidence and family-bound morale inside Yijing. 关静 reads that condition more accurately: a westward elite-cavalry sortie may be militarily imaginable, yet politically destructive if the remaining garrison experiences it as abandonment.
Hanji 972 adds the prior Youzhou assessment failure. 刘虞 correctly sees 公孙瓒’s fortified position and evasive illness claims as dangerous, but he misreads the conditions needed to attack: troop discipline, siege means, and the gap between a humane target-limited order and the actual battlefield. 田筹 gives the positive contrast by reading route, court weakness, display risk, and later settlement conditions more concretely.
Hanji 996 and Hanji 997 add a negative “情” case through 臧洪. His feeling for old superior 张超 is not treated as false, but the episodes argue that he fails to place that feeling inside the current field: he serves 袁绍, Yuan Shao is allied with 曹操, and resistance at 东郡 followed by refusal after capture leaves no strategic room. Here “情” becomes the thing to be assessed, not the thing that should replace assessment.
Hanji 1006 adds the talent-market version immediately before that local-governor failure. 郭嘉 reads 袁绍 and 曹操 not by courtesy alone, but by whether each leader can distinguish priorities, make decisions, and convert advice into action. The source also contrasts Guo Jia’s bold forecasts with 荀攸’s cautious secrecy, making adviser style part of condition-sensitive strategy.
Hanji 1020 adds a late-Han version through the host’s language of “识势、蓄势、借势.” 何夔’s judgment on 袁术 is not a tactical route map like Xue Gong’s, but it still applies the same condition-sensitive logic: Yuan Shu’s imperial claim fails because timing, trust, and talent support do not match the ambition.
The episode also gives the positive contrast through 许褚. Xu Chu’s local fortification protects people during disorder, but his later submission to 曹操 is read as a correct recognition of larger momentum. “势” therefore includes both the ruler’s strategic timing and a subordinate actor’s decision about when local autonomy should become alignment with a stronger field.
Hanji 1019 adds a negative “防势” version through 刘宠. 陈国 has military strength, local popularity, and grain, but Liu Chong and 骆俊 do not sufficiently account for 袁术 as a desperate actor after his grain demand fails. In this source, reading “势” means not only borrowing momentum or building capacity, but also guarding against the backlash of another actor’s collapsing position.
Hanji 1018 adds the coalition-interest version immediately before that sequence. 陈珪 sees that Yuan Shu’s nominal allies 韩暹 and 杨奉 do not have a durable shared interest with him, while 陈登’s handling of 吕布 shows the actor-psychology side of “情.” In this branch, condition-sensitive assessment means reading dependency, vanity, legitimacy, and spoils before counting troops.
Hanji 1017 supplies the prior family-survival version. Chen Deng reads Lü Bu as 轻于去就, while Chen Gui is interpreted as managing the family’s risk in stages: use Lü Bu for short-term balance, use office and local force for medium-term capacity, and keep a long-term channel to 曹操. The episode therefore makes “情” include a partner’s exit habit and makes “势” include the timing of when a local family should shift its primary alignment.
Hanji 1016 adds the prior legitimacy-and-exposure calculation. 陈珪 reads 袁术’s imperial claim through 名器合法性, refuses pressure built around 陈登, and warns 吕布 that marriage with Yuan Shu would make 徐州 absorb the wrong war. In this branch, “势” includes symbolic legitimacy and geography, while “情” includes Lü Bu’s resentment, vanity, and willingness to reverse once the alliance is reframed.
Hanji 1015 supplies the setup before that branch. 郭嘉 and 荀彧 read 袁绍’s current fight with 公孙瓒 as a window to handle 吕布, while Xun Yu and 钟繇 treat 关中 as a rear-stability problem solvable through 马腾 and 韩遂’s self-preserving interests. The same episode makes 袁术’s self-coronation a negative “势” judgment: title, timing, recognition, and actor reputations do not support the move.
Hanji 1014 adds the immediately prior confidence-and-comparison layer. 曹操 is angry at 袁绍 but still recognizes material weakness, so 荀彧 and 郭嘉 use 十胜十败论 to shift assessment from troop count alone to leader conduct, legitimacy, discipline, talent use, decisiveness, reward, and military judgment. In this branch, “势” includes whether a weaker side can find usable advantage in organizational quality and morale.
Hanji 1010 adds a negative late-Han ruler assessment through 贾诩’s judgment of 刘表. Liu Biao can preserve 荆州, absorb remnants after 张济’s death, and govern defensively, but Jia Xu says he does not read disorder-era change sharply enough, lacks decisive action, and is too suspicious. This source therefore separates 保境安民式守成治理 from conquest-level strategic assessment.
Key Claims
- Hanji 909 adds that frontier strategy must read capacity, enemy adaptation, border leakage, internal disorder, and court incentives together; an offensive can be strategically wrong even when the threat is real.
- Hanji 945 adds that strategic assessment can fail before open violence, when a leader mistakes a risky escalation plan for regained control despite new warnings and changing actor incentives.
- Hanji 946 adds that a stronger actor can lose if they assess a lethal conflict as if normal procedure and delayed persuasion still govern the field.
- Hanji 947 adds that a correct timing assessment can expire quickly: Bao Xin sees Dong Zhuo’s vulnerable arrival window, but Yuan Shao’s hesitation lets staged momentum and troop absorption change the field.
- Hanji 956 adds that visible resources are not enough: the actor must read whether pressure, insider persuasion, and self-comparison are distorting the real balance of force and grain.
- Hanji 960 adds that condition-sensitive strategy can begin as migration and camp choice: place safety, family exposure, ruler quality, and usable authority must be read before committing.
- Hanji 960 also adds the Jieqiao battlefield version: visible cavalry advantage can be reversed when formation, distance, and crossbow timing change the real conditions.
- Hanji 965 adds that assessment must account for defeated actors’ safety fears and camp stability; a formal policy that looks clean can be strategically dangerous if it leaves armed losers no credible exit.
- Hanji 966 adds that crisis assessment must treat intermediary treatment, captured command channels, and outside military leverage as part of the situation, not as separate etiquette or loyalty issues.
- Hanji 975 adds that assessment can begin with small clues before any formal battle: title avoidance, route mismatch, main-force absence, and local-official behavior together reveal the crisis.
- Hanji 978 adds that condition-sensitive assessment can turn on whether a threatening actor is truly committed, and whether hostage pressure changes or only tests a county official’s alignment.
- Hanji 979 adds that correct assessment can be as concrete as seeing which ford, boat line, city, or grain road changes the whole campaign before the main battle begins.
- Hanji 985 adds that assessment can fail when coercive leverage over court bodies blinds actors to camp fragility, auxiliary incentives, and the political cost of hostage symmetry.
- Hanji 987 adds that condition-sensitive judgment may require refusing an attractive expansion when the current base, harvest, rear defense, and target民心 do not support it.
- Hanji 988 adds that condition-sensitive judgment can turn on supporter loss, family-hostage refusal, soldier audacity, and the residual awe triggered by a visible emperor.
- Hanji 989 adds that condition-sensitive strategy can turn on how route control, food access, old enmity, and rumor change the meaning of the same supply act.
- Hanji 990 adds that condition-sensitive strategy can be as small as knowing when a local grain-and-route position should be defended, abandoned, or submitted rather than turned into a larger gamble.
- Hanji 995 adds that “势” includes route exposure and rival appetite, while “情” includes whether a helper has a trustworthy moral floor.
- Hanji 1029 adds that intelligence can convert character reading into strategy by identifying which local actors actually obey an administrator and which have become separate centers of force.
- Hanji 996 and Hanji 997 add that “情” can become a strategic failure when old loyalty and resentment are not checked against current office, alliance, follower safety, and survival conditions.
- Hanji 1006 adds that assessing “势” can include choosing which camp can use one’s talent, not only choosing a battlefield route or alliance.
- Hanji 1002 adds that “势” can be a time-sensitive legitimacy window: the same imperial name can be a trap for a claimant, an exit route for an ally, and an opportunity for a protector.
- Hanji 1003 adds that “势” can be route access plus actor psychology: grain, troops, face, title, and timing decide whether Cao Cao can reach the emperor before relocation is even possible.
- Hanji 1004 adds that “势” can require moving the court when supply and control conditions fail, or changing the attack route when a frontal crossing stalls.
- Hanji 1007 adds that local prestige and ambition cannot substitute for assessing troops, grain, nearby powers, and dependency options.
- Hanji 998 adds that a refuge can be a strategic misread when walls and grain are treated as substitutes for initiative, allies, and people-support.
- Hanji 1030 adds that a plausible sortie can still be the wrong move when garrison morale and abandonment perceptions are the decisive conditions.
- Hanji 972 adds that diagnosing another actor’s rebellion is not enough; the attack still has to match troops, tactics, route, and executable command constraints.
- Hanji 1014 adds that strategic assessment can include comparative leadership systems and confidence, not only external timing or troop numbers.
- Hanji 1010 adds that preserving a stable region is not the same as reading and acting on a wider disorder-era opportunity.
- Hanji 1016 adds that “势” includes the legitimacy and geography created by titles and marriage alliances, not only troop counts or routes.
- Hanji 1015 adds that “势” includes strategic sequencing, rear-area reassurance, and the reputational obligations triggered by a claimant’s title move.
- Hanji 1020 adds that “势” can be a regime-level legitimacy and talent question, not only a battlefield or route-choice question.
- Hanji 1019 adds that a strong local order can still misread danger when an external rival’s bad position makes assassination more likely.
- Hanji 1018 adds that “势” can lie inside an alliance’s incentive structure: a large coalition may be weak if its members can be given a better legitimacy-and-spoils path.
- Hanji 1017 adds that “情” includes a partner’s tendency to leave lightly, while “势” can be managed through staged local-family alignment.
- Hanji 187 adds that a strategy can be ranked by whether the actor has the temperament and coalition horizon to execute it, not only by whether the route exists on a map.
- A strategy’s name or precedent is not enough; its usable meaning changes with control, timing, incentives, and morale.
- “行” checks the practical distribution of gain and loss before a plan is moralized as wise.
- “势” checks whether the temporary battlefield or political moment supports the move.
- “情” checks whether actors’ loyalties, fears, hopes, and exhaustion make the expected behavior plausible.
- Historical analogy is useful only when the current case matches the underlying conditions, not merely the visible surface.
