Alexander Farnese / Duke of Parma
Alexander Farnese, Duke of Parma, appears in 695. Elizabeth I vs The Catholics: The Shadow War (Part 5) as Philip II’s most effective commander in the Low Countries. The episode identifies him as governor general of the Netherlands and captain general of the Army of Flanders from 1578.
Parma’s role combines war and diplomacy. By 1584, he has reversed earlier Spanish weakness, recovered much of the south for Spain, offered surrender terms that restore Catholicism, and put enough pressure on the Dutch Revolt that English leaders fear the rebellion could fail.
His siege of Antwerp is the episode’s decisive demonstration. Forts, a pontoon bridge across the Scheldt, and failed rebel fire-ship attacks make the city’s surrender in August 1585 the crisis that sends Elizabeth I toward the Treaty of Nonsuch.
