Alien (film)

Alien is the original film case in The real horror of ‘Alien’ and how it explains why we’re not paid enough. Planet Money and [[ArinDube|Arin Dube]] read the Nostromo crew as blue-collar space truckers working for Weyland-Yutani, with the alien threat made possible by a contract clause, hidden risk, and the workers’ inability to refuse without losing their pay.

The episode uses the film to teach Negative Job Amenities, Compensating Differentials, Shrouded Job Attributes, and Labor Monopsony. Its argument is that Alien’s horror depends not only on the creature, but on the weak worker power that lets the company convert a dangerous discovery into an employee obligation.
