analytics.js

analytics.js is the small open-source routing library that becomes the decisive pivot point in Peter Reinhardt on Segment’s Pivots and Charm Industrial’s Carbon Removal. Peter Reinhardt says it was originally created to send ClassMetric data to tools such as Mixpanel, [[GoogleAnalytics|Google Analytics]], and Kissmetrics.

The library matters because it was more valuable than the larger analytics product the team had spent a year building. A Hacker News launch produced strong attention, stars, and signups, and users then asked for a hosted version where destinations could be changed with buttons. That turns analytics.js into the source’s cleanest Open Source Wedge and Internal Tool Productization example: a small internal tool became Segment because outside users recognized the integration pain.
