安国 / An Guo (Southern Xiongnu)
Updated · 1 episodes · 1 show · 1 source notes
Overview
安国 / An Guo was a Southern Xiongnu chanyu whose brief current profile centers on jealous hostility toward Shizi. He is distinct from An Guo of Khotan.
Current Profile
In Hanji 768, An Guo succeeded his deceased brother as chanyu but faced comparison with Shizi, a brave and broadly respected former heir-line figure. An Guo aligned with recently surrendered Northern Xiongnu elements who hated Shizi, complained against Protector of the Xiongnu Du Chong, and later fled when Han forces arrived. His attempt to kill Shizi failed at Manbo, and his uncle Xi killed him and installed Shizi instead.
Key Characteristics
- Ruler whose insecurity was triggered by a talented and popular collateral figure.
- Converted status anxiety into a lethal plot against Shizi.
- Used enemies of Shizi among surrendered Northern Xiongnu as allies.
- Lost control of the crisis once Han officials and internal Xiongnu opponents converged.
- Functions as the episode’s main example of jealousy becoming political violence.
Evidence
- Jealous rivalry: Hanji 768 says An Guo envied Shizi because Shizi was brave, strategic, trusted, and popular.
- Anti-Shizi coalition: Hanji 768 says An Guo drew close to surrendered Northern Xiongnu who hated Shizi and plotted against him.
- Collapse and death: Hanji 768 says An Guo fled, failed to enter Manbo to attack Shizi, and was killed by his uncle Xi.
Qualifications
The source presents An Guo mainly through the lens of jealousy, so institutional factors behind the succession, the role of Du Chong’s conduct, and the motives of uncle Xi remain underdeveloped. An Guo should not be merged with similarly named non-Xiongnu figures.
What Changed
- Created a Southern Xiongnu An Guo page separate from 安国 / Anguo (Khotan, late Han).
- Added An Guo as the central case for jealousy escalating into attempted political killing.
Relationships
- 南匈奴 / Southern Xiongnu - polity whose succession and court crisis An Guo destabilized.
- 师子 / Shizi Chanyu - rival whose talent and popularity An Guo treated as a mortal threat.
- 杜崇 / Du Chong (Protector of Xiongnu) - Han official whose conflict with An Guo helped trigger intervention.
- 朱晖 / Zhu Hui (He-era frontier commander) - Han commander who joined Du Chong in moving against An Guo.
- 皇甫棱 / Huangfu Leng (late Han) - previous Duliao general whose protection of Shizi frustrated An Guo’s access.
- Jealousy as Political Violence / 嫉妒转化为政治杀机 - concept directly exemplified by An Guo’s conduct.
