Anthony Babington

Anthony Babington appears in 696. Elizabeth I vs The Catholics: Killing the Queen of Scots (Part 6) as the Catholic conspirator whose plan gives the Babington Plot its name. The episode says his proposal combined six men to kill Elizabeth I, the release of Mary, Queen of Scots, a domestic Catholic rising, foreign invasion, and restoration of Catholicism in England.

Babington’s correspondence reaches Mary through Gilbert Gifford’s controlled beer-barrel channel. Once Mary’s reply is decrypted by Thomas Phillips, Babington becomes part of the evidentiary chain that lets Francis Walsingham and William Cecil / Lord Burleigh move against Mary.

Babington is arrested after Mary’s arrest and is executed on 20 September 1586. The episode notes that he and other conspirators confessed to the release, invasion, and Catholic restoration plan while denying Elizabeth’s murder plan.
