Antwerp

Antwerp appears in 695. Elizabeth I vs The Catholics: The Shadow War (Part 5) as the largest and richest city in the Low Countries and a major financial supporter of the Dutch Revolt. Its siege becomes the episode’s turning point because losing the city makes English nonintervention look strategically dangerous.

Alexander Farnese / Duke of Parma begins besieging Antwerp in June 1584 and cuts the city off with forts and a pontoon bridge across the Scheldt. Rebel attempts to destroy the bridge with explosive fire ships fail, and the city surrenders on 17 August 1585.

The source treats Antwerp’s fall as both defeat and redistribution. Protestant residents are allowed to leave, many bankers and merchants move north, and Amsterdam benefits as the commercial centre of gravity shifts toward Holland.
