Argo floats

Argo floats appear in Taking the shine off: albedo and global temperatures as the ocean-observation system that helps verify Earth Energy Imbalance. Oliver Morton says the floats have measured ocean temperature, salinity, and depth patterns since about 2000.

The source uses Argo as independent confirmation of satellite measurements. Because most excess planetary heat goes into the oceans, Ocean Heat Monitoring can check whether NASA satellite instruments are capturing the same broad change in absorbed energy.
