Babington Plot

The Babington Plot appears in 696. Elizabeth I vs The Catholics: Killing the Queen of Scots (Part 6) as the conspiracy that gives Francis Walsingham and William Cecil / Lord Burleigh the evidence path for trying Mary, Queen of Scots. Anthony Babington’s plan links assassination of Elizabeth I, Mary’s release, Catholic domestic rising, foreign invasion, and restoration of Catholicism in England.

The plot is exposed through Spy Network Entrapment. Gilbert Gifford’s beer-barrel courier channel appears secure to Mary’s supporters, but it is supervised by Walsingham and decrypted by Thomas Phillips.

In the episode’s synthesis, the plot matters because it turns Mary from dangerous claimant into written conspirator under the Act for the Queen’s Safety. It therefore connects underground conspiracy to formal trial, public execution, and later Confessional War Escalation.
