百里奚 / Baili Xi
百里奚 / Baili Xi appears in 《资治通鉴·周纪》24丨商鞅曰:我咋裂了 as the ministerial comparison 公孙鞅 / 商鞅 wants 赵良 to make. The episode presents him as another outsider talent without strong family backing, but with a very different remembered ending.
The source summarizes Baili Xi’s long failed career before Qin: he wanders among states, takes office in Yu late in life, becomes captive after Jin destroys Yu, is sent as a dowry slave toward Qin, escapes to Wan, and is made a cattle herder after being seized by Chu people. His reversal comes when 秦穆公 hears of him and redeems him for five black ram skins, creating the “五羖大夫” title.
The episode uses Baili Xi to sharpen Shang Yang’s self-image. Qin Mu Gong’s recognition of Baili Xi becomes an earlier success story for outsider talent, while 秦孝公’s later ambition to revive Qin greatness makes Shang Yang want to see himself as a greater version of that precedent.
《资治通鉴·周纪》25丨赵良对商鞅说:你不配 turns Baili Xi from a setup into the positive half of 赵良’s rebuke. Zhao Liang says Baili Xi held power without generating Qin resentment, helped Qin act eastward against Zheng, repeatedly assisted Jin ruler-making, and helped Chu avoid calamity. His personal conduct is also part of the argument: he is remembered as traveling without grand vehicles, entourage, or guards, and his death produces public grief across Qin society.
That remembered mourning matters because the episode contrasts it with 公孙鞅 / 商鞅’s security-heavy life. Baili Xi becomes an example of 民心型政治安全: achievement joined to social trust can lower personal danger, while achievement joined to fear can make power depend on coercion and ruler protection.
