Overview

鲍圣之 / Bao Shengzhi enters the wiki as a 汉武帝-era official whose profile now spans direct coercive authority, senior appointment, and dangerous moderation. Hanji 379-2 presents him as Bao Gongzi, a direct envoy with power to suppress banditry, inspect commanderies and kingdoms, and execute disobedient lower officials. Hanji 381-1 records his appointment as Yushi Dafu after 杜周’s death. Hanji 386-2 later places him inside the 巫蛊之祸 aftermath as an official who tries to slow summary punishment and then dies under Wudi’s harsh response.

Current Profile

Hanji 379-2 makes Bao Shengzhi a concrete face of emperor-direct coercive authority before the later Wugu story. He is sent as zhizhi envoy in bright clothing and with axe authority, tasked with suppressing thieves and inspecting local government. His mandate is extraordinary: officials below two-thousand-stone rank who refuse orders can be executed without first asking Wudi.

The same episode complicates Bao’s severity. In Bohai, he hears of 隽不疑, receives him after Jun refuses to remove his sword, and accepts Jun’s counsel that effective authority must avoid both brittle harshness and useless softness. Bao recommends Jun, leading to Jun’s Qingzhou inspector appointment. Bao therefore becomes not only a killing-power figure but a severe official capable of recognizing moderation when it appears in the right ritual and intellectual form.

Hanji 386-2 supplies the later risk of that moderation. During the Wugu armed crisis, Bao tries to slow summary punishment after Liu Ju’s defeat, keeping alive a father-son distinction that Wudi’s rebellion frame does not tolerate. The source note says his attempt ends in suicide, marking how dangerous restraint could become when imperial suspicion demanded visible punishment.

Hanji 381-1 adds an office-transition layer between the envoy profile and the Wugu endpoint. In 95 BCE, after Du Zhou dies, Wudi appoints Bao Shengzhi Yushi Dafu. The source does not develop Bao’s tenure, but it confirms that the earlier direct-envoy figure later stands in a senior censorial office before the Wugu-era moderation case.

Key Characteristics

  • Han Wudi-era direct envoy associated with bandit suppression and commandery-kingdom inspection.
  • Holder of exceptional punitive authority over disobedient lower-ranked officials.
  • Severe official whose authority helps define early 绣衣使者皇权监察.
  • Appointed Yushi Dafu after Du Zhou’s death in the 95 BCE chronology.
  • Receptive to Jun Buyi’s advice that威严 must be balanced with恩惠.
  • Wugu-era official who tries to slow summary punishment and is destroyed by the harsh treason frame.

Evidence

Envoy coercive authority:

  • Hanji 379-2 says Bao Shengzhi is appointed as zhizhi envoy, wears bright clothing, carries axe authority, suppresses bandits, and inspects commanderies and kingdoms.
  • Hanji 379-2 says he may execute officials below two-thousand-stone rank who disobey orders without first reporting to Wudi.

Moderation recognition:

  • Hanji 379-2 says Bao receives Jun Buyi after the sword-refusal scene, listens to his counsel on balancing hardness and softness, and talks with him late into the night.
  • Hanji 379-2 says Bao recommends Jun Buyi, after which Wudi appoints Jun Qingzhou inspector.

Senior appointment:

  • Hanji 381-1 says Wudi appoints Bao Shengzhi Yushi Dafu after Du Zhou’s death in 95 BCE.

Wugu punishment hesitation:

  • Hanji 386-2 says Bao Shengzhi attempts to slow summary punishment after Liu Ju’s defeat, but Wudi treats leniency as failure to punish rebellion.

Qualifications

This page is bounded to Hanji 379-2, Hanji 381-1, and Hanji 386-2. It does not reconstruct Bao Shengzhi’s complete title history, exact legal authority, whether every direct envoy in this period shared his powers, or the full circumstances of his Wugu-era death. Hanji 381-1 adds the Yushi Dafu appointment but not a complete account of Bao’s tenure. Hanji 379-2’s comparison to later锦衣卫 is recorded as an explanatory analogy, not as institutional identity.

What Changed

  • Added Hanji 381-1’s Yushi Dafu appointment after Du Zhou’s death, linking the severe-envoy profile to later senior office.
