Overview

褒斜道 / Baoxie Road is a Qinling corridor running through the Bao and Xie river valleys and connecting northern approaches to 汉中 and the wider 古蜀道网络.

Current Profile

The road is defined by both state engineering and strategic vulnerability. Narrow valleys required timber and stone trestle construction, but flood, fire, war, and repeated use frequently destroyed the roadway. Surviving cliff sockets, inscriptions, and later cliff-side road sections therefore reveal a history of recurrent construction rather than uninterrupted preservation.

Its early profile was strongly military because the northern valleys offered little settlement, lodging, or supply outside official posts. Later rerouting through Liuba and Fengxian toward the Chencang system supported more ordinary official and civilian travel.
