Battle of Ibera / 伊贝拉战役

Overview

The Battle of Ibera / 伊贝拉战役 is the 215 BC Roman victory south of the Ebro that stops Hasdrubal Barca / 哈斯德鲁巴·巴卡 from carrying a second Carthaginian army toward Hannibal Barca / 汉尼拔 in Italy after Cannae.

Current Profile

The episode frames Ibera as strategically disproportionate to its fame. Rome is under severe pressure after Cannae, while Hasdrubal intends to move north from New Carthage / 新迦太基 and reinforce Hannibal. The older Scipio commanders meet him before that movement can succeed.

Roman infantry defeats the Carthaginian infantry, although Hasdrubal escapes with cavalry. The battle therefore does not destroy Carthaginian power in Spain, but it blocks the immediate concentration that could have compounded Rome’s crisis in Italy.

Key Characteristics

  • Fought in Iberia in the aftermath of Cannae.
  • Blocks an attempted reinforcement of Hannibal’s Italian army.
  • Produces a Roman infantry victory without capturing Hasdrubal.
  • Has strategic consequences larger than its later public memory.

Evidence

Qualifications

The episode’s claim that Ibera is among the war’s most consequential battles is an interpretive counterfactual, not proof that Hasdrubal would certainly have joined Hannibal or changed the final outcome. Exact location, forces, casualties, tactics, chronology, and intentions remain source-scoped.

What Changed

  • Created the battle node linking Roman survival after Cannae to active containment in Spain.
