Battle of the Metaurus / 梅陶鲁斯河战役

Overview

The Battle of the Metaurus / 梅陶鲁斯河战役 is the 207 BC Roman victory that kills Hasdrubal Barca / 哈斯德鲁巴·巴卡 and destroys his reinforcement army before it can unite with Hannibal Barca / 汉尼拔 in Italy.

Current Profile

Hasdrubal reaches northern Italy after rebuilding in Spain and crossing the Pyrenees and Alps. He sends Hannibal instructions for a junction in Umbria, but Roman forces intercept the message.

Gaius Claudius Nero leaves enough force to conceal his movement from Hannibal, marches north, and joins Marcus Livius Salinator. Hasdrubal recognizes the presence of two consuls, attempts to withdraw, and is blocked near the Metaurus before the Romans attack.

His death ends the immediate prospect of joining the brothers’ armies. The Romans then send his severed head to Hannibal’s camp, making strategic defeat into deliberate psychological communication.

Key Characteristics

  • Results from intercepted communications and rapid Roman concentration.
  • Joins separate consular commands against one Carthaginian army.
  • Prevents Hasdrubal and Hannibal from uniting in Italy.
  • Kills Hasdrubal and destroys the reinforcement campaign.
  • Is followed by a calculated act of psychological warfare against Hannibal.
