Bernardino de Mendoza
Bernardino de Mendoza appears in 694. Elizabeth I vs The Catholics: A Treacherous Conspiracy (Part 4) as Philip II’s ambassador in England and a hard-edged diplomatic voice for Spain. After Francis Drake’s return, Mendoza demanded action against Drake and warned Elizabeth I that war was easier to begin than to end.
The episode then places Mendoza inside the Throckmorton Plot network. He supported Catholic invasion planning from London, helped connect Spanish backing to Guise’s project, and became one of the figures named in Francis Throckmorton’s tortured confession.
On 19 January 1584, Francis Walsingham presented charges of conspiracy against Mendoza before the Privy Council. Mendoza denied them, but his expulsion broke normal Anglo-Spanish diplomacy and pushed the crisis toward Confessional War Escalation and the Spanish Armada.
