Burntollet Bridge Attack
The Burntollet Bridge attack appears in 698. The Troubles: The Brink of Civil War (Part 2) as the 4 January 1969 loyalist ambush of People’s Democracy marchers on the way to Derry / Londonderry. The episode says loyalists, including off-duty B Specials, attacked while RUC officers stood by.
The source treats Burntollet as a point where both activist provocation and loyalist violence deepened the crisis after Terence O’Neill’s December appeal. Catholics increasingly saw the state as unwilling to protect them, while loyalists increasingly saw civil-rights activism as intentional disorder.
