Overview

Calypso is the island nymph who receives and holds Odysseus on Ogygia between the first-half shipwreck and the second-half release sequence of The Odyssey.

Episode 687 ends with Odysseus alone after the destruction of his ship, drifting for nine days and reaching Ogygia, where Calypso welcomes and cares for him but will not let him leave. Episode 688 begins from the same stalled-homecoming problem: Odysseus has spent seven years on her island, a place described as outside ordinary geography and time, until Zeus sends Hermes and Calypso must release him. Her offer of immortality sharpens his choice of mortal return over timeless suspension.
