Capital Safety

Capital Safety is the safety-equipment company in A pro-worker experiment in private equity that became KKR’s first test case for broad worker equity. The episode describes it as making products such as harnesses for people working on skyscrapers or oil rigs.

The Capital Safety case shows the early, flawed version of Private Equity Worker Ownership. Workers were nervous about private-equity ownership, KKR heard complaints about safety, unscheduled overtime, and employees feeling unheard, and Pete Stavros says the legal and tax rollout was complicated by multinational operations and shareholder rules.

KKR eventually structured equity for all employees, but the program was not communicated clearly before the 2015 sale to [[ThreeM|3M]]. Cindy Cordes’s five-figure payout therefore became financially meaningful but motivationally late.
