Cardinal Ruffo

Overview

Cardinal Fabrizio Ruffo was the royalist organizer who led the Army of the Holy Faith against the Parthenopean Republic and negotiated its capitulation in 1799.

Current Profile

Sent by Ferdinand IV, Ruffo mobilized a large popular Catholic and monarchist force known as the Sanfedisti. Its advance joined religious loyalty and anti-republican mobilization to banditry, looting, lynching, and other violence, making Ruffo a case of popular counter-revolution rather than simple elite restoration. Yet the episode distinguishes his effort to prevent a final massacre in Naples: he negotiated safe passage to Toulon for republican defenders, a settlement later rejected by the royal court and Horatio Nelson.

Key Characteristics

  • Clerical royalist commissioned to restore mainland authority.
  • Organizer of a socially broad Catholic and monarchist army.
  • Commander unable to fully contain violence within his coalition.
  • Negotiator who preferred capitulation to destruction in Naples.
  • Subordinate whose authority to grant safe passage became the central dispute.
