Chalcuchima

Overview

Chalcuchima was a senior commander of Atahualpa’s victorious northern army who entered Spanish captivity despite commanding an overwhelming force and was later executed during Pizarro’s advance toward Cusco.

Current Profile

646. The Fall of the Incas: Death to the Emperor (Part 3) places Chalcuchima between the Inca civil war and the opening Spanish conquest. Stationed near Xauxa with a reported 35,000 troops, he initially refuses Hernando Pizarro’s demand to travel to Cajamarca but ultimately obeys Atahualpa and accompanies a tiny Spanish party into captivity.

At Cajamarca he greets Atahualpa with ritual submission and tears. The Spaniards then demand his treasure and partly burn him under torture. His capture removes one of the few commanders with the experience and forces to coordinate resistance; Part 4 later places his execution before Quisquis continues the retreat toward Quito.

Key Characteristics

  • Senior general in Atahualpa’s northern military command.
  • Commander of a large force positioned between Cusco and Cajamarca.
  • Constrained by continued obedience to the captive emperor.
  • Entered captivity rather than attacking a much smaller Spanish detachment.
  • Subjected to torture for treasure and later executed during the advance on Cusco.

Evidence

Qualifications

The source does not independently verify the reported troop total, dialogue, gestures, exact reasons for Chalcuchima’s compliance, or torture details. Obedience, shock, uncertainty, and strategic calculation may have interacted; the outcome does not prove that military resistance was impossible.

What Changed

  • Established Chalcuchima’s command position, entry into captivity, and loss as a resistance center.
