陈步乐 / Chen Bule (Western Han)
Updated · 2 episodes · 1 show · 2 source notes
Overview
陈步乐 / Chen Bule is the cavalry messenger sent by 李陵 to carry route and terrain drawings back to Chang’an. His praise that Li Ling could inspire soldiers to fight to the death first wins favor and appointment from 汉武帝, then becomes dangerous when news arrives that Li Ling has surrendered to 匈奴; Hanji 378-1 says Chen Bule dies by suicide after imperial questioning.
Current Profile
Hanji 377-2 places Chen Bule at the information link between a deep-frontier force and the imperial court. Li Ling has mountains, rivers, and traveled terrain mapped during the thirty-day advance, then sends Chen Bule to deliver the material and report. Chen Bule does not take a developed combat role; his importance is that reconnaissance and an eyewitness judgment become a transmitted court record before the army is encircled.
Hanji 378-1 adds the fatal reversal. Wudi initially expects Li Ling to die rather than surrender. When confirmation of surrender reaches court, the emperor treats the event as betrayal and turns to Chen Bule, whose earlier testimony had helped validate the commander. The episode says Chen Bule commits suicide after the angry questioning, making him a secondary casualty of the court’s rapid shift from praise to blame.

- Cavalry messenger attached to Li Ling’s expedition.
- Carrier of mapped route, mountain, and river information to Chang’an.
- Court witness who reports Li Ling’s ability to command sacrificial loyalty.
- Recipient of appointment as a lang official from Han Wudi.

Evidence
- Reconnaissance delivery: Hanji 377-2 says Li Ling sends Chen Bule with drawings of the terrain crossed by the force.
- Imperial report and reward: Hanji 377-2 says Han Wudi hears from him that Li Ling can make subordinates fight to the death and appoints him a lang official.
- Operational boundary: Hanji 377-2 then returns to the encircled force without assigning Chen Bule a further battlefield role.
- Court reversal and death: Hanji 378-1 says Wudi angrily questions Chen Bule after Li Ling’s surrender is confirmed and that Chen Bule then dies by suicide.
Qualifications
This page is bounded to two compact podcast episodes and does not reconstruct Chen Bule’s origin, exact route, the maps’ survival or later use, his precise lang appointment, the wording of Wudi’s questioning, or the full circumstances of his death. Hanji 378-1 supplies sequence but does not establish whether the suicide followed a formal accusation, a sentence, fear, shame, or another motive.
What Changed
- Added the reversal from rewarded witness to suicide after Li Ling’s surrender and imperial questioning.
Relationships
- 李陵 - commander who entrusts him with the mapped report.
- 汉武帝 - ruler who receives his testimony and appoints him.
- 地形阵型战力放大 - related tactical concept because terrain knowledge precedes the force’s later terrain-dependent defense.
- 匈奴 - opposing power whose capture of Li Ling triggers the court reversal around Chen Bule.
