Overview

陈龟 is a Huan-era frontier official whose current wiki profile now spans appointment, administrative repair, and political martyrdom. Hanji 843 shows him becoming Duliao general in 158 CE and proposing frontier cleanup, tax/corvee remission, and capable appointments; Hanji 844 then shows his old conflict with 梁冀, recall, ignored anti-Liang memorial, and hunger-strike death.

Current Profile

Chen Gui’s profile is now broader than a political-danger case. In Hanji 843, 南匈奴 rebels with 乌桓 and 鲜卑 pressure across the frontier, and Chen Gui answers before leaving for the Duliao post by diagnosing corrupt governors, bought office, exhausted provinces, floods, insects, and weak commanders as causes of military failure. 汉桓帝 adopts much of the program: replacing inspectors and frontier officials, empowering capable commanders, and remitting 并州 and 凉州 burdens for one year. Hanji 844 then shows the fragility of that service record once Liang Ji turns an old grievance into recall, ignored memorial, and death by hunger strike.

Key Characteristics

  • Chen Gui diagnoses frontier disorder through internal governance: corrupt officials, bought offices, bad commanders, and impossible burdens matter as much as enemy movement.
  • His administrative remedy combines personnel cleanup, frontier-command fit, legal authority, and fiscal/corvee relief for disaster-hit provinces.
  • His 158 CE proposal shows Emperor Huan can still adopt practical repair when it does not yet require open confrontation with Liang Ji.
  • His later danger comes from a center where accusation by a dominant outer-relative can outweigh frontier service.
  • His final anti-Liang memorial makes him an early witness before the later 159 CE anti-Liang sequence becomes executable.
  • His death by hunger strike turns failed remonstrance into a marker of court paralysis and personal protest.
  • He must be kept distinct from 陈珪, the later Xuzhou adviser with a separate Three Kingdoms-era profile.

Evidence

  • Frontier appointment and diagnosis: Hanji 843 says Chen Gui is appointed Duliao general after Southern Xiongnu, Wuhuan, and Xianbei pressure, then warns that corruption, bought office, floods, insects, poverty, and weak commanders drive frontier failure.
  • Relief and personnel program: Hanji 843 says Chen Gui recommends replacing unfit officials, appointing capable ethnic-frontier commanders, strengthening law enforcement authority, and remitting Bingzhou/Liangzhou taxes and corvee.
  • Temporary adoption: Hanji 843 says Emperor Huan follows Chen Gui’s suggestions, replaces inspectors and officials, remits one year of burdens, and produces large savings.
  • Frontier office and replacement: Hanji 844 says Chen Gui is recalled after Liang Ji’s accusation and that Zhong Hao succeeds him as Duliao general.
  • Anti-Liang witness role: Hanji 844 presents Chen Gui’s memorial as a direct list of Liang’s misconduct addressed to Emperor Huan.
  • Court paralysis and death: Hanji 844 says Huan receives the memorial without acting and that Chen Gui then dies after seven days of hunger strike.
  • Identity distinction: Hanji 844 uses an ASR-like 陈归 form, but the received passage supports 陈龟; this page is separate from 陈珪.

Qualifications

The page is bounded to two podcast source notes and should not infer a complete biography from these episodes alone. Hanji 843’s policy adoption and Hanji 844’s fatal non-action are sequential rather than contradictory: one shows limited administrative repair, while the other shows the danger of directly confronting Liang Ji. Exact memorial wording, full office lists, and all institutional procedures around recall remain source-scoped.

What Changed

  • Added Hanji 843 as the earlier appointment and frontier-administration layer before Hanji 844.
  • Expanded Chen Gui from anti-Liang martyr into a frontier repair official with a concrete relief and personnel program.
  • Qualified the profile by separating Huan’s temporary 158 CE policy adoption from his later failure to act against Liang Ji.

Relationships

  • 农本民生优先于币制调整 - adjacent Hanji 843 pattern because Chen Gui also prioritizes concrete burdens over technical or military-only fixes.
  • 查因安抚式治理 - related governance logic because Chen Gui asks why frontier subjects and soldiers are failing before prescribing suppression.
  • 梁冀 - persecutor whose old grievance and accusation drive Chen Gui’s recall and final danger.
  • 汉桓帝 - recipient of Chen Gui’s memorial who does not visibly act.
  • 南匈奴, 乌桓, and 鲜卑 - frontier pressure field that triggers Chen Gui’s Duliao appointment.
  • 并州 and 凉州 - burdened frontier provinces named in Chen Gui’s tax and corvee remission program.
  • 张奂 - commander appointed after the same frontier crisis and developed in Hanji 844.
  • 种暠 - successor at the Duliao frontier after Chen Gui’s removal.
  • 报复性政治恐怖 - adjacent pattern because Chen Gui’s criticism and reputation threaten a dominant powerholder.
  • 君臣反馈失灵 - related failure because direct warning reaches the ruler without producing correction.
