Overview

车纽 / Che Niu is the rebel-backed Southern Xiongnu chanyu in Hanji 820’s 140 CE crisis. His profile matters because he shows how frontier rebellion can move from raiding to alternative rulership once the court-recognized chanyu order is broken.

Current Profile

Hanji 820 first places Che Niu beside Wusi in the revolt that besieges Meiji and kills frontier officials. After Chen Gui forces Xiuli and the Left Wise King to suicide, Wusi installs Che Niu as chanyu, and the revolt links with Wuhuan, Qiang, and other frontier groups.

Che Niu’s challenge does not last. Zhang Dan defeats him at Mayi with Youzhou Wuhuan and local forces, after which Che Niu surrenders. Wusi’s continued resistance means Che Niu is a major claimant but not the whole revolt.

Key Characteristics

  • Rebel figure who moves from co-leader to chanyu after Xiuli’s death.
  • Embodies a legitimacy crisis created by factional rebellion and worsened by Chen Gui’s unauthorized coercion.
  • Defeated and absorbed through surrender rather than total annihilation.
  • Distinct from Wusi, who continues resistance after Che Niu submits.

Evidence

  • Rebel-backed chanyu: Hanji 820 says Wusi later establishes Che Niu as chanyu after the chanyu-suicide crisis.
  • Military defeat and surrender: Hanji 820 has Zhang Dan defeat Che Niu at Mayi and receive his surrender.
  • Partial resolution only: Hanji 820 keeps Wusi active after Che Niu’s surrender.

Qualifications

This page is source-bounded to Hanji 820. It should not yet be treated as a full biography of Che Niu or of Southern Xiongnu succession norms.

What Changed

  • Created Che Niu as a canonical page because Hanji 820 makes his chanyu claim central to the Southern Xiongnu revolt.

Relationships

  • Southern Xiongnu - Che Niu claims chanyu status within its factional politics.
  • Wusi - begins as Che Niu’s partner and later installs him as chanyu.
  • Xiuli - Che Niu’s claim follows the destruction of Xiuli’s court-recognized position.
  • Zhang Dan - defeats Che Niu and receives his surrender.
  • Unauthorized frontier command intervention - names the command overreach that helps create Che Niu’s opening.
