陈馀 / Chen Yu

陈馀 / Chen Yu enters the wiki through 《资治通鉴·秦纪》124|焚书坑儒?!我在B站为秦始皇平反!. The source summary calls him a 卫国人 and places him in the aftermath of the 秦代焚书令, when he worries about 孔鲋 and goes to check on him.

His role in this episode is connective. First, he makes the danger to private holders of classical books concrete; second, he later helps Kong Fu accept 陈胜’s invitation to serve as博士 in the rebel regime. The page keeps both points source-scoped because the episode does not yet develop Chen Yu’s later political career.

Qinji 128-3 places Chen Yu beside 张耳 before Chen Sheng’s kingship. The transcript renders him as “陈渝,” but the role matches the existing Chen Yu branch: he and Zhang Er flee Qin pursuit as former Wei worthies, live under changed names in Chen County, and serve as gatekeepers. His near-conflict with a petty official lets Zhang Er teach the “small impatience ruins the great plan” lesson.

When Chen Sheng asks whether he should become Chu king, Chen Yu joins Zhang Er in warning that immediate kingship exposes private ambition. Their alternative is 六国复国式反秦策略, a wider anti-Qin restoration route that Chen Sheng rejects.

Qinji 128-5 continues Chen Yu beside Zhang Er. They advise 武臣 to declare himself Zhao king after 周文 retreats and after Chen Sheng’s treatment of returning commanders makes the central rebel authority look dangerous. Then they advise Wu Chen to strengthen Zhao rather than move west against 秦国, arguing that Chen Sheng’s recognition is temporary and self-interested.

The episode also adds a source-comparison problem. 《史记》 gives Zhang Er and Chen Yu a private grievance against Chen Sheng, while 《资治通鉴》 omits it. This makes Chen Yu part of 史书删节与责任归属转移 as well as 反秦阵营诸侯化分裂.

Qinji 128-8 makes Chen Yu’s political position central to an outside persuasion scene. 赵厮养卒 argues that if 燕国 kills 武臣, Chen Yu and 张耳 can claim vengeance for Zhao’s king and attack Yan. The source uses that possible incentive, not a direct statement from Chen Yu, to explain why Yan lets Wu Chen return.
