Overview

车师国 / Cheshi Kingdom is synthesized as a Western Regions polity whose fertile land, route position, hostage politics, and屯田 potential make it a repeated pressure point between 西汉 and 匈奴. Hanji 422-1 adds the earlier Dijie 3-4 layer: King Wugui aligns with Xiongnu, threatens Han-Wusun communications, is defeated by 郑吉 and Sima Xi, flees to 乌孙, and leaves Han governing through hostages, small garrisoning, and屯田. Hanji 429 later shows the same place becoming the crisis that produces Wei Xiang’s “骄兵必败” remonstrance.

Current Profile

The evidence now has an earlier control experiment before the later 64 BCE crisis. Hanji 422-1 says Cheshi moves inside Han-Xiongnu rivalry after the Han Zhaodi period. Xiongnu draws the Cheshi crown prince into its orbit, Wugui becomes king, marries into Xiongnu, and proposes cutting the road between Han and Wusun. Zheng Ji and Sima Xi answer from the 渠犁屯田 base with pardoned convicts, stored grain, and allied Western Regions troops. Cheshi is defeated and Wugui surrenders, but the settlement is fragile: Wugui fears Xiongnu retaliation and flees to Wusun, Han sends his wife and children to Chang’an as hostages, Xiongnu installs Dumo, and Han leaves only a few hundred officials and soldiers to屯田 and govern.

Hanji 429 says Han again attacks Cheshi in 64 BCE. Cheshi first seeks Xiongnu help, but when support does not arrive in time it submits to Han. Zheng Ji leaves three hundred soldiers there and returns to Quli, but Xiongnu then attacks Cheshi because it sees Han control and屯田 accumulation there as a future threat.

Cheshi’s importance is geographical and logistical. It is far from Quli, and Zheng Ji cannot hold it cheaply once Xiongnu moves in force. Xuan’s final settlement after 魏相’s remonstrance in Hanji 429 is limited: Chang Hui extracts Zheng Ji, Han installs Junxiu as Cheshi king, moves Cheshi’s people to Quli, and leaves the old Cheshi land to Xiongnu. The two source notes therefore present Cheshi as a contested forward position where submission, hostage control, garrisoning, evacuation, and land concession appear before durable protectorate authority.

Key Characteristics

  • Western Regions polity contested by Han and Xiongnu in 64 BCE.
  • Fertile frontier land whose屯田 and grain-storage potential makes it strategically sensitive.
  • Earlier route-security problem because Wugui’s Xiongnu alignment threatens Han-Wusun communications.
  • Local submission case where delayed Xiongnu support pushes Cheshi toward Han.
  • Rescue-logistics problem because Zheng Ji’s small garrison and distant Quli base cannot easily hold it.
  • Settlement object in which Han preserves personnel and political arrangement while yielding the old land to Xiongnu.

Evidence

Earlier route and hostage crisis:

  • Hanji 422-1 says Wugui becomes Cheshi king, marries a Xiongnu wife, and advises Xiongnu to cut the Han-Wusun route.
  • Hanji 422-1 says Zheng Ji and Sima Xi use Quli屯田 stores, pardoned convicts, and Western Regions allied troops to defeat Cheshi.
  • Hanji 422-1 says Wugui flees to Wusun, Han sends his wife and children to Chang’an, Xiongnu installs Dumo, and Han leaves about three hundred people to屯田 and govern.

Later contested strategic position:

  • Hanji 429 says Han attacks Cheshi in 64 BCE and Cheshi submits after Xiongnu does not rescue it in time.
  • Hanji 429 says Xiongnu officials fear that Han control of Cheshi’s fertile land and grain stores will become a threat.
  • Hanji 429 says Zheng Ji leaves three hundred soldiers at Cheshi, then later brings Quli屯田 troops to rescue it.

Settlement outcome:

  • Hanji 429 says Chang Hui’s force recovers Zheng Ji and the besieged soldiers.
  • Hanji 429 says Han installs the former crown prince Junxiu as Cheshi king, moves Cheshi’s people to Quli, and gives the old Cheshi land to Xiongnu.

Qualifications

This page is source-scoped to the Hanji 422-1 and Hanji 429 Cheshi layers. It does not reconstruct Cheshi’s full geography, earlier and later state divisions, exact relation to later Cheshi front/rear kingdom terminology, Wugui’s full biography, Dumo’s later status, Sima Xi’s career, or the complete Han-Xiongnu struggle over the Turpan basin.

What Changed

  • Added Hanji 422-1 as the earlier Wugui, Han-Wusun route, hostage, Xiongnu replacement, and屯田-governance layer before Hanji 429’s later crisis.
