Overview

赤亭守战 / Chiting Defense is the Hanji 788 battle sequence in which 虞诩 uses a small Han force to break a much larger Qiang pressure field while moving into 武都郡. It is the source’s concrete case for command by mobility, deception, fire discipline, and enemy-tempo control.

The defense begins before Yu Xu reaches Chiting. Qiang forces block his route because they know his reputation, so he falsely claims he lacks troops and must wait for court reinforcements. When the Qiang disperse to raid neighboring counties, Yu Xu force-marches through the opening and uses increasing stoves to make the enemy believe Han reinforcements have arrived.

At Chiting itself, Yu Xu does not answer the siege with simple bravery. He conceals strong crossbows, uses small crossbows to make Han weapons look weak, then concentrates strong-crossbow fire when the Qiang attack closely. After repeated sorties and night harassment, he stages false reinforcements by rotating clothed soldiers through city gates and leaks a decision to fight. The Qiang withdraw, and Yu Xu’s prepared ambush strikes them while they are crossing water.
